Father of Madonna Orphan Surfaces, Wants to Support Child
Originally posted 04/06/2009 03:20PM
Madonna has now left Malawi but the controversy she stirred up there with her ongoing attempt to adopt a child hasn't simmered down.
First, the long-missing father of 3-year-old Mercy James, the child Madonna would like to make her own, has surfaced – and he claims he wants to be a part of his daughter's life.
The young man, James Kambewa, tells PEOPLE he didn't even know his daughter was alive until her name surfaced in the Madonna adoption case. Now a security guard, Kambewa says he learned the girl's mother, 15-year-old Mwandida Maunde, had died – and assumed their child was dead too.

Guy Ritchie Offers Support After Madonna's Failed Adoption Bid
Originally posted 04/04/2009 10:00AM
British director Guy Richie called his ex-wife Madonna “a great mum” following news that the singer's bid to adopt a second child from Malawi was rejected Friday.
Richie, 40, father to the couple's son Rocco, 3, and David Banda, 3 – the Malawian boy he and Madonna officially adopted in 2008 – issued a statement through his rep saying: “I fully supported Madonna in her decision to apply for this adoption, and I am saddened that her application has been rejected. She is motivated only by being a caring parent who seeks to share some of the advantages and opportunities that her life has given her.”
A judge in Malawi blocked Madonna’s attempt to adopt Mercy James, 3, citing a residency rule for prospective parents that requires they spend from 18 to 24 months in the country (that requirement was waived for Madonna’s first adoption).
Madonna, 50, has filed an appeal to the ruling.

Originally posted 12/17/2008 07:40AM
Madonna and Guy Ritchie are slamming recent stories about their divorce settlement.
The joint statement – issued in London – came two days after Madonna's U.S. rep gave the Associated Press details of the supposed deal. Liz Rosenberg said that Madonna, 50, was set to hand over cash and property worth between $76 million and $92 million, calling it "one of the largest [divorce] payouts ever."
But now the couple calls that information "misleading and inaccurate."

How Madonna Is Coping with Her Split
Originally posted 11/22/2008 03:30PM
Madonna is doing her best to get through her split from husband Guy Ritchie – with a little help from ex-husband Sean Penn, according to a source close to the singer.
"It's a sad situation, but she's not heartbroken," says the source, who saw the 50-year-old icon hours before a London court granted the couple a preliminary "quickie divorce" on Friday. "She's handling it well."
Madonna, who rocked Philadelphia as part of her Sticky and Sweet tour on Thursday, is focusing on her work and her children to keep her mind off the end of her nearly eight-year marriage to Ritchie, says the source. "She's got a very busy life."

Madonna & Guy Granted Preliminary Divorce
Originally posted 11/21/2008 08:20AM
It's official! (Almost.)
Just one month after announcing their split, Madonna and Guy Ritchie were granted a preliminary "quickie divorce" Friday in the High Court of London.
According to a document released by the court, 50-year-old Madonna – the petitioner – said in a sworn statement that she is divorcing Ritchie for his "unreasonable behavior."
In a court proceeding that took all of one minute, the judge issued a decree nisi – the first step in the U.K.'s two-stage divorce process – to "Ciccone ML" and "Ritchie GS" and 16 other (non-celebrity) couples.
Neither Madonna or her director ex attended the hearing. In fact, even their attorneys skipped the courtroom.

Sean Penn: Guy Ritchie Will Shine, Post-Madonna
Originally posted 11/07/2008 01:30PM
Sean Penn took a subtle swipe at former wife Madonna – suggesting that her latest soon-to-be ex, movie director Guy Ritchie, might enjoy a career resurgence after their split.
"What's my 'British' thing to say?" mused Penn, 48, while accepting BAFTA/LA's Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film at Thursday's Britannia Awards ceremony in Century City. "Guy Ritchie is back!"
Penn's jab, which prompted a delayed-reaction roar of laughter and applause from the largely English audience, came on the heels of another Madonna-based punchline from director Paul Thomas Anderson, who presented his friend with the award.
