Hailee Steinfeld Worries Guys Date Her for the Wrong Reason

An Academy Award nominee for her very first starring role, Hailee Steinfeld would seem to have it all.

But even at 14, the True Grit star – whose movie debuts on home video Tuesday – realizes finding romance in Hollywood may be more difficult than nabbing an Oscar nod.

"I'm not dating," she told PEOPLE with a laugh at the Young Hollywood Awards at L.A. Live. "I feel like I can have crushes on guys, but I'm always worried they may only feel a certain way because of who I am."

True Grit Star Hailee Steinfeld Still Gets in Trouble for Texting

True Grit's leading lady, Hailee Steinfeld, may be a rising star in Hollywood, but she admits at home she's still just a regular 14-year-old who sometimes gets scolded by her parents.

"I'm a normal girl. I get in trouble for texting too much and using the computer too late – all kinds of stuff like that," Steinfeld told PEOPLE at the 16th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, where she collected her first high-profile acting trophy as best young actress.

"I'm not getting used to it at all," she says of her new stint as an awards show standout. "This is so new to me. This is the beginning of it all and this is really exciting for me. I'm really honored to be a part of it."

Among a laundry list of seasoned scene-stealers starring in the Coen brothers's latest film, True Grit – Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Jeff Bridges – there's a new leading lady ready to make a big name for herself: Hailee Steinfeld.

As her first starring role in a major film, which is the second adaptation of the Charles Portis 1968 novel of the same name, Steinfeld holds her own as Mattie Ross, a fiery teen avenging her father's death in the wild, wild west. Before you catch the film, meet the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native, 14, who isn't afraid to take on hefty costars or a pit of snakes.

1. She got her big break in a Kmart commercial

Just months before she was rubbing shoulders on the dusty plains with Bridges and Damon, Steinfeld was bantering with high school kids in a squeaky-clean "Blingatude" back-to-school commercial for Kmart. She's the girl in the light-blue headband and heart-print top. It was one of Steinfeld's few onscreen roles before being cast in True Grit.
