As most everyone knows, billionaire Bruce Wayne has an alter ego. But as was announced late Thursday, it's something of a surprise: Ben Affleck will play Batman in an upcoming sequel to this summer's hit Man of Steel.
For the first time, too, the Caped Crusader will join forces with Superman, again to be played by British actor Henry Cavill, 31, in the as-yet-untitled movie to be directed by Man of Steel's Zack Snyder.
The mash-up will begin production next year and be released July 17, 2015, reports EW.com. Man of Steel stars Amy Adams (as Lois Lane), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Diane Lane (Martha Kent) have also been announced to return.

Kaley Cuoco's whirlwind romance with Man of Steel star Henry Cavill is one for the history books – and it seems The Big Bang Theory star is already moving on.
"Love of my life. Caught making out!" she shared on Instagram Sunday, posting a photo of herself cuddling up to a beautiful brown horse.
An avid equestrian, Cuoco, 27, often spends her free time in the saddle. And when not riding horseback, she's often in the company of her pit bulls, who have enjoyed swimming in her pool this summer.

Faster than a speeding bullet … it's over.
Superman Henry Cavill and The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco have broken up, just days after the news broke of their relationship.
A source confirms the split to PEOPLE, but no reason was given.
As it was, Cavill, 30, who stars in Man of Steel, and Cuoco, 27, had only been in what had been described as the "beginning stages" of coupledom.

It's a bird, it's a plane ... it's Superman's kryptonite, Kaley Cuoco!
Days after a hike through the hills followed by a sushi stop-off, Henry Cavill, 30, and The Big Bang Theory actress, 27, snuck in a little PDA while getting groceries in Los Angeles.
The actor – true to Man of Steel's signature colors in a red tee and jeans – kept a good grip on his real-life Lois Lane, who stayed well shaded in a brown fedora, matching sunglasses and a leopard-print top.

Henry Cavill and Kaley Cuoco's new romance is heating up – even if it's just to burn calories.
The new couple squeezed in some one-on-one time together in Los Angeles this week.
The Man of Steel star, 30, and The Big Bang Theory's leading lady, 27, went on a hike, followed by a stop for sushi near Cuoco's Sherman Oaks, Calif., home.
Both wearing caps and fitness attire, the duo strolled casually side-by-side when they were photographed mid-workout.

Superman has found his Lois Lane.
Henry Cavill and Kaley Cuoco are a new couple, PEOPLE has learned.
"They were both single and started dating recently," says a source close to the Man of Steel star and Big Bang Theory actress.
While Cuoco, 27, and Cavill, who split from his girlfriend, Fast & Furious 6 star Gina Carano, in early May, have yet to step out publicly, they're enjoying getting to know each other.
"It's just the beginning stages of a relationship and they're having a great time," says the source.

You don't become Superman overnight.
"It's a very, very long and involved process," Henry Cavill told PEOPLE at Monday's Man of Steel premiere in New York – the movie opened nationwide Friday – about his exhausting physical transformation from human to superhuman.
It went in stages. And all of them were painful.
"Five months before shooting there was varying stuff which ended up being mass building and then leaning down," said the actor, 30. "Throughout the shoot it was just waking up and making sure I got an hour in [of exercise] before I went to work."
