Hugh Hefner is holding hope things will work out after his son Marston Hefner was arrested for investigation of domestic violence on his live-in Playmate girlfriend Claire Sinclair.
"If they care about each other, they'll patch it up," the Playboy founder tells PEOPLE.
Marston, 21, was arrested without incident at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday and later released on $20,000 bail on the misdemeanor offense, according to Pasadena police.
According to online reports, Sinclair suffered minor injuries, and she appeared to address the matter on Twitter.

Almost exactly one year ago, Hugh Hefner popped the question to then-girlfriend Crystal Harris – but following the rollercoaster of events, including a breakup, that took place since the proposal, the Playboy mogul says his goal for 2012 is to do what he does best: stay unwed.
"This year has been a very interesting year for me, I almost got married," Hefner, 85, recently told PEOPLE at the Playboy Mansion.

Shortly after Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris ended their engagement in June, the Playboy mogul said Harris let him keep Charlie, their shared Cavalier King Charles spaniel.
But now, Hefner, 85, says he and his former fiancée, 25, are still going back and forth about who gets permanent ownership of the pooch.
"We both love the puppy," Hefner told PEOPLE on Thursday at the Playboy Mansion in L.A. "I told her if she wants to keep the ring and the Bentley, then maybe I can keep the puppy. I [hope] we will work it out."

Hugh Hefner believes Lindsay Lohan's Marilyn Monroe-themed Playboy pictorial will be a keepsake – but the media mogul admits he initially had doubts about featuring the embattled actress on its cover.
"The concept came from my editors," Hefner, 85, told PEOPLE during a recent interview at the Playboy Mansion in L.A.
"I had mixed emotions to begin with," he said. "I could not have anticipated, quite frankly, that it would turn out to be such a sensational newsworthy event, or that the pictorial would turn out so well."

The he said-she said continues.
It seemed like the war of words ended in July between Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris after the Playboy founder said his former fiancée "lied" when she told Howard Stern they only had sex once – and that it lasted "like two seconds."
But months later, Hefner, 85, is elaborating on Harris's comments, claiming that the couple, whose wedding she called off in June, "had sex once a week" when they were together.
"We had sex with her and a girlfriend," Hefner tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We had sex the first night that we met with another girl, and it was such a nice relationship that I kept them both over for a weekend."

Kendra Wilkinson remembers landing in hot water for exposing her days as Hugh Hefner's girlfriend in her tell-all Sliding Into Home – but the former Girls Next Door star believes her comments were far less hurtful than those of Hef's former wife-to-be, Crystal Harris.
"Her situation is a lot more harsh," Wilkinson, 26, told PEOPLE at Monday's NBCUniversal Press Tour All-Star party in L.A. "She was about to get married to him. I would have never agreed to get married to him."
Even though Wilkinson's book laid bare her sex-life with the Playboy mogul, 85, she says she would never go out of her way to hurt Hef the way Harris, 24, did when she gossiped with Howard Stern last week about Hefner's sexual prowess – or lack thereof.

After telling Howard Stern on Tuesday that sex with former fiancé Hugh Hefner lasted "like two seconds," Crystal Harris admits she said too much.
"The Stern interview scared me, he's harsh," Harris Tweeted Thursday night about her revealing on-air remarks. "I was unprepared and blurted out things I shouldn't have said, I'm sorry."
Apology accepted: Hefner, 85, who said his runaway bride, 25, was lying about the couple's sex life, said he appreciated her public mea culpa.

There's only one rule when hooking up with Hugh Hefner in the bedroom: There are no rules – or so reveals Miss June 2004.
"I've heard girls say they have a lot of fun in there," says Hiromi Oshima, a Playmate who spoke to PEOPLE during Playboy TV's "TV for 2" party Tuesday night at the Playboy Mansion.
In fact, many Playmates were quick to defend Hefner after his ex-fiancée Crystal Harris said on Howard Stern's radio show that her only sexual encounter with the 85-year-old Playboy founder lasted "like two seconds."

His runaway bride dissed his bedroom abilities – but Hugh Hefner isn't taking the insults lying down.
After ex-fiancée Crystal Harris told Howard Stern that sex with the 85-year-old Playboy founder lasted "like two seconds" on Tuesday's show, Hefner retaliated: That's not the case, he says.
"Crystal lied about our relationship on Howard Stern but I don't know why," Hef Tweeted Tuesday night, although he has since removed the message from his account. "Maybe a new boyfriend?"
