Hugh Jackman Prepares to Pass Sexiest Man Alive Crown

Originally posted 10/31/2009 08:00AM

As the one-year reign of Hugh Jackman as PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive winds down, it's time to pass the crown to a new deserving hunk. So who does the Australian screen star, Oscar host and current Broadway leading man want to see take the title next?

"Me! I want to be the first to have it back to back, buddy," Jackman, 41, told PEOPLE's reporter on Friday in New York, while attending the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Concert (set to air on HBO Nov. 29). "That would be fantastic!"

Though he would like to reclaim the title, the Steady Rain star (who costars in the Broadway drama with Daniel Craig, certainly another SMA possibility) says it's been quite an exciting year as the Sexiest Man Alive, but also one that's been a little demanding.

"I thought there were thousands of other guys that deserved it, but it's been a great year. But now the pressures off," he said good-naturedly. "I can be a slob again."

The first shot of next year's awards season was fired Monday, with the welcome announcement that British raconteur Ricky Gervais will be hosting the Jan. 17 Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The appointment has even prompted an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times, declaring that this could potentially take a lot of the glimmer off the Oscars.

If you want to break the box office, you get an A-list star – and Broadway's learning that that's as true in theater as it is on the silver screen.

With movie stars on the marquees of its plays, Broadway is seeing one of its best fall seasons in recent years, selling $21.1 million from Oct. 12 to 18, according to The New York Times.

A Steady Rain has grossed over $1 million, thanks to stars Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman. Meanwhile, Shakespeare is hot as never before, with Jude Law raking in $904,914 last week, bringing total box office receipts for Broadway to $21.1 million for the week of Oct. 12 to 18.

The applause you're hearing on the Great White Way is for the way Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig handled an obnoxious cell-phone user in the middle of their sold-out play, A Steady Rain – now one of the hottest tickets on Broadway.

But the clapping for the play itself isn't nearly as passionate.

"It all comes across like an elongated pitch meeting for an over caffeinated buddy-cop movie that might be directed by Sidney Lumet or Martin Scorsese," writes Reuters critic Frank Scheck.

He may have won an Emmy for hosting the Tony Awards, but Hugh Jackman says his son, Oscar, sees him in a different light.

"My son just thinks I'm a showoff, basically," Jackman told PEOPLE at the opening ceremony of Climate Week in Manhattan.

And humility isn't all that the 9-year-old is educating the Wolverine star about: He's also the enforcer of an eco-friendly lifestyle in the Jackman household.

"[He doesn't] sit back and go, 'Oh whatever Dad says, I'll turn off the light.' He demands it!" said Jackson.

Hugh Jackman may have hosted this year's Oscars, but he really wasn't a member of the club.

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences took steps to rectify that – inviting the Wolverine star to join the honorary body, along with such other prospective new members as Anne Hathaway, Michael Cera, James Franco, Michelle Williams and Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle.

"These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy president Sid Ganis, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks."

What Hugh Jackman Told Neil Patrick Harris

Originally posted 06/05/2009 12:00PM

Neil Patrick Harris may be no stranger to the Broadway stage, but how will TV's How I Met Your Mother star fare as host of Sunday's Tony Awards?

"I'll probably be a little more joke-y," Harris, 35, told PEOPLE Thursday during a break from rehearsing the Great White Way's annual rite of spring. "I'm going to angle a little bit more towards Jon Stewart in a perfect world."

As for having to fill shoes impressively worn in years past by the Sexiest Man Alive, Harris says, "Hugh Jackman did the [opening] production number very well, so to try and replicate [that], I worry that it would seem like I'm trying to repeat. I wouldn't want to be a repeater."
