Jack Wagner doesn't take his relationship with happily wed Dancing with the Stars partner Anna Trebunskaya lightly.
"It's a mini marriage when you have a dance partner," Wagner, 52, told PEOPLE backstage after Dancing's season 14 premiere on Monday. "This is like a relationship. ... Anna can attest to that, having had so many dance partners."
And, like a relationship, Wagner has discovered that it's important to know how to read your partner. "We learn when to be funny and have fun, and when to be serious," he says. "You have to learn when the other person needs space. And we're learning."

Heather Locklear's hospitalization on Thursday night reportedly came after the actress ingested a mixture of drugs and alcohol.
While a rep for Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center tells PEOPLE that Locklear, 50, was discharged from their hospital Friday evening, leaving in the care of her family, she was reportedly "out of control" when her sister dialed 911 night prior, according to Entertainment Tonight.
"Heather became a different person on drugs," a source tells the show, adding that Locklear, who was spotted on Tuesday night at an L.A. Lakers game, may be heading into rehab shortly.

There may be an extra place setting around Jack Wagner's dinner table this holiday season – and not just because he and longtime girlfriend Heather Locklear are no longer together.
Wagner, 52, discovered earlier this month that he has a long-lost 23-year-old daughter from a "fling" he had with the girl's mother in the late 1980s, TMZ reports.
The girl, named Carrie, introduced herself to Wagner backstage at a Nov. 4 concert in Boca Raton, Fla. where the actor was performing with Rick Springfield.
Less than two weeks after the encounter, Wagner and Locklear announced they had called off their engagement, saying planning their wedding was not allowing them enough time to spend with their children.
