Reese Witherspoon's a Weekend Chicken Farmer

You can take the girl out of the South, but you can't take the South out of the girl.

Ask New Orleans-born, Tennessee-raised Reese Witherspoon, who tells InStyle magazine all about how she tries to bring a little bit of Dixie to her life in Hollywood.

"We spend the weekends outside L.A, in Ojai, where I have a farmhouse," she says of her life with her kids and her boyfriend, who happens to be Jake Gyllenhaal. "We have chickens and we grow cucumbers and tomatoes. I love it. It reminds me of where I grew up in Tennessee."

Of course, it's no substitute for a real life in the South, but Witherspoon, 33, makes do.

• Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, treating the actress's kids Ava, 10, and Deacon, 5, to a cold treat at Twist in Brentwood, Calif. "Jake was great with the kids and they all shared little samples before deciding on flavors," an eyewitness tell us of the family frozen yogurt outing. But with dessert comes exercise –and earlier in the week, the couple took an exercise class at Burn 60, focusing on arm and shoulder work, as well as cardio. "The air conditioning wasn't on and in the 90 degree heat, Reese and Jake sweated and struggled like the rest of the class," an onlooker says, adding that the famous duo "seemed to enjoy" their workout.

Interview magazine found out when they asked Gyllenhaal, who co-stars with Portman in this fall's war drama Brothers, to ask about her favorite foods, music and frightening 80s cartoons.

Portman's favorite food? "Well, I don't think you can really improve upon Carvel ice cream cake," she says in magazine's September issue. Gyllenhaal shared that he is more of a Baskin-Robbins guy, partially because he had read that the Obamas shared their first kiss over 31 flavors.

• Jake Gyllenhaal, rooting for the Los Angeles Dodgers during a night out with brother-in-law Peter Sarsgaard at sold-out Dodger Stadium. The guys watched as the home team bested the Cincinnati Reds, 6-2, from the stadium's club seats, and cheered like crazy when Manny Ramirez hit his grand slam. They also grabbed some peanuts and Cracker Jacks – traditional ballpark fare! – and Gyllenhaal was very nice when approached for pictures by fans.

• Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, cozying up while brunching at the Blue Duck Tavern inside the Washington, D.C.'s Park Hyatt. The couple ordered up the crab omelette, sausage and veggie side dishes – and also got their caffeine fix with a cappuccino and espresso. While Witherspoon was reading The New York Times at the table, she didn't neglect her boyfriend. "They were cute because they were holding hands a lot," a source says. Before leaving, the couple snapped pictures of the restaurant's open kitchen.
