About seven weeks after the birth of her son, Xander, January Jones was back to work in the role that made her both admired and pitied, the former Betty Draper, now the re-married Betty Francis, on AMC's Mad Men.
With her baby still "really little," says the actress, 34, returning to the set "was tough with the long days. But work made it really comfortable for me."
As it was, "Every season I have a little kind of first day of school nerves. The first episode I'm always finding my way back into my character's shoes. … But then after a few days, I'm able to fall pretty easily back into her, and find her voice and her body language and everything that I do for her," says Jones.

AMC's Mad Men is back Sunday after an absence of more than a year, and its maniacally intense fans are anticipating what new developments are in the pipeline at the chilled offices of 1960s ad agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Mad Men is too subtle to resort to cliffhangers – people here live or die according to what account gets signed over a business lunch lubricated with drinks – but season 4 ended with everyone poised on the brink of ... something.
Something maybe good, possibly bad. Maybe neither. It's that kind of show. Ominous, but incrementally so.
Before Sunday's premiere, here's a refresher as to where the show's main characters were when we left them:

Mad Men welcomed a very special guest this week – January Jones's new baby boy!
The proud mom, 33, brought her 4-week-old son, Xander Dane Jones, to the set of her AMC drama on Tuesday. She was reportedly smiling from ear to ear as she introduced him to John Slattery and a few other cast members.
Xander, born Sept. 13, is Jones's first child.
Mad Men recently began filming its fifth season, due to premiere in 2012.

She may play an icy blonde on the Emmy-winning Mad Men, but in real-life January Jones is one red-hot mama.
Barely more than two weeks after her first child, Xander Dane Jones, was born on Sept. 13, the actress, 33, was seen out and about with him – and back in beautiful shape.
As for how her maternity might play out on the new season of the AMC hit, costar Jon Hamm, 40, told PEOPLE at this past weekend's Rape Foundation Annual Brunch, hosted by the cast of Mad Men: "I'll let you see that when you see it, but she is no longer pregnant. She has had a baby, and she's very excited and happy and healthy. Both sides are very healthy and happy, which is very sweet."

January Jones's son Xander Dane isn't even a week old, but the newborn is already supportive of his Mad Men mommy.
"Her baby had his fingers crossed," the Emmy-winning TV show's creator Matthew Weiner told reporters backstage after accepting an award Sunday night. "She told me that."
The absence of Jones, 33 – who skipped out on the small screen's biggest night to stay home with her little one – definitely didn't go unnoticed by her castmates.

And baby makes two.
Mad Men star January Jones welcomed her first child on Tuesday, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.
Son Xander Dane Jones and the new mom are "doing great," the rep says.
Jones, 33, chose to keep the sex of her baby under wraps, remarking "it's going to be a surprise for me" during a June interview.
The actress announced the pregnancy in April. A source told PEOPLE at the time, "She’s really looking forward to this new chapter in her life as a single mom."

Expecting her first child in the fall, mom-to-be January Jones is experiencing a pain-free pregnancy.
"I feel great. I haven't had any weird physical side effects," Jones, 33, told PEOPLE at Wednesday’s New York press conference for her new movie X-Men: First Class.
"I feel pretty lucky so far."
Without any physical discomforts or any mood swings, the Mad Men star says she’s also not dealing with any odd cravings. "Everybody is asking that. I haven’t yet," she says. "It's a bummer. I wish I had something weird to tell."

January Jones's recent pregnancy announcement may have come as a surprise to some – but not necessarily to those close to her.
The actress, who is expecting her first child in the fall, has talked about wanting to become a mother for some time.
"It's something that she's wanted to do and that she's excited to do," Jones's Mad Men costar Aaron Staton told PEOPLE at The Creative Coalition and WWE's "be a STAR" launch in Washington, D.C., Friday. "January is such a sweet person," Staton said. "I think she's an honest person. I think she's really going to be a great mother."
