Penélope Cruz Dodges Engagement Questions
Originally posted 11/17/2009 07:40PM
Ever since Penélope Cruz wore a sapphire-and-diamond sparkler on her ring finger at the October premiere of Broken Embraces, buzz has mounted that the actress is engaged to actor Javier Bardem.
It's a question she just won't answer – no matter how hard she's pushed. During her Late Show appearance, airing Tuesday night, David Letterman asked the actress, 35, point-blank if she's engaged to Bardem, 40. "I don't feel comfortable talking about my private life in public," she said, laughing.

Will Penélope Cruz soon be Mrs. Javier Bardem?
According to several online reports, Cruz and her boyfriend, fellow Spanish actor Javier Bardem, are engaged. Reps for both actors had no comment.
The couple – who first met while filming Jamon, Jamon in 1992, one of Cruz's first films, before working together again in 2008's Vicky Christina Barcelona – have kept a low profile during their 2-year romance, choosing not to walk red carpets together, evading the paparazzi and remaining extremely tight-lipped about one another in the press.

Javier Bardem Exits Role Due to Exhaustion
Originally posted 05/01/2008 12:05PM
Javier Bardem has withdrawn from the movie musical Nine, based on the Broadway hit, because of exhaustion from a busy work year and award season, reports Variety.
This is the second recent project that the Oscar winner (No Country for Old Men) has left. The Spanish actor, 39, was originally cast in Francis Ford Coppola's drama Tetro – but was replaced by actress Carmen Maura after the director decided the role would be better filled by a female.
Subsequent reports suggested that Bardem was simply unavailable.

Javier Bardem's Hair-Raising Challenge
Originally posted 02/22/2008 12:30PM
Currently one of awards season's sexiest men, Oscar nominee Javier Bardem had to cope with a major challenge on the set of No Country for Old Men: his Prince Valiant haircut.
"He hated it and loved it," the movie's hair stylist Paul LeBlanc tells PEOPLE. "But he would say that once I did his hair, he could become the character. Javier is a true actor and got into the character sublimely."
The cut, inspired by paintings of medieval knights, generated buzz among cast and crew.
"On set, everybody would look at [Javier] and say, 'My God, what is that?'" LeBlanc says. "Josh Brolin told him at one point, 'You ain't gonna [score] for three months.' "

I realized at the SAG Awards... he's Spanish!" cracked Harrelson. "I always
thought he was Mexican. No, I'm kidding. I thought he was Argentine."
Harrelson was on hand Monday night to help present Bardem with the Montecito

a performer who has given a series of standout performances.

Javier Bardem Likes to Take Risks

"It feels great. It's a big surprise. I'm very happy about the whole thing with No Country, because I think it's a movie that is really risky and it gets to people, and it's difficult to be in a movie that gets to people."
Javier Bardem, 38, talks to PEOPLE after winning the Critics' Choice Award for best supporting actor in No Country for Old Men, which also won best picture. The Coen brothers were also named best director Monday night. The actor declined to answer any questions about Penelope Cruz, but did say his plans for the night included "getting drunk."
