Javier Bardem Exits Role Due to Exhaustion

Originally posted 05/01/2008 12:05PM

Javier Bardem has withdrawn from the movie musical Nine, based on the Broadway hit, because of exhaustion from a busy work year and award season, reports Variety.

This is the second recent project that the Oscar winner (No Country for Old Men) has left. The Spanish actor, 39, was originally cast in Francis Ford Coppola's drama Tetro – but was replaced by actress Carmen Maura after the director decided the role would be better filled by a female.

Subsequent reports suggested that Bardem was simply unavailable.

The cut, inspired by paintings of medieval knights, generated buzz among cast and crew.

"On set, everybody would look at [Javier] and say, 'My God, what is that?'" LeBlanc says. "Josh Brolin told him at one point, 'You ain't gonna [score] for three months.' "
