Jay Leno Jokes About Hospitalization

Originally posted 04/27/2009 09:20PM

For Jay Leno, two days in the hospital was definitely a laughing matter.

In his return to The Tonight Show on Monday, the funnyman didn't give any details of his illness (his rep said earlier it was apparent dehydration), but he came back with plenty of jokes about it.

"What happened was – and I think this was a mistake – I ate a raw pig a friend brought back from Mexico," Leno, 58, said in his monologue.

He also found out he had a "really bad HMO," saying, "For X-rays, they had to take me over to Burbank Airport and put me through the baggage."

Somebody buy Jay Leno a drink.

The Tonight Show host was released from the hospital Friday after he was admitted for observation for what his rep said was an apparent case of dehydration.

The late-night funnyman, 58, started feeling badly Thursday morning and was taken to Providence Saint Joseph's Medical Center, located adjacent to NBC's studios where The Tonight Show tapes. The show was canceled, as was Friday's taping.

"We are happy to say that Jay Leno is feeling much better and has been released from the hospital," NBC said in a statement. "He's anxious to return to work on Monday."

Even in the hospital Jay Leno hasn't lost his sense of humor.

The Tonight Show host, 58, canceled the taping of his talk show and checked into Providence Saint Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank on Thursday. No information has been released on the nature of the funnyman's ailment, but a rep for the show says he's "doing just fine."

"He was kidding around with the hospital staff and running his monologue jokes by the doctors and the nurses," says NBC's Tracy St. Pierre. "He's expected back to work on Monday."

According to sources, Leno, who rarely calls in sick and is famous for his strong work ethic, "was just not feeling well. Somebody from the show drove him over to the hospital."

Simon Cowell – No Time For Obama

Too busy for President Barack Obama? That's what Simon Cowell claimed on Monday's Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

"He wanted to have dinner, and our diaries didn't quite match," said the acerbic American Idol judge, 49. "He wanted to do eight [o'clock], I was free at nine. We didn't quite connect."

The remarks came four days after Obama appeared on the NBC late-night talk show and told Leno that since taking on the responsibilities of commander-in-chief he's found Washington, D.C., to be a lot like American Idol – and everyone is a Simon Cowell.

President Barack Obama's lighthearted Thursday night appearance on NBC's Tonight Show didn't leave everyone clutching their sides with laughter.

Obama's comments to Jay Leno about his low bowling score – in particular, an off-the-cuff remark that it was "like Special Olympics or something" – had the chief executive calling Special Olympics chairman Tim Shriver from Air Force One on Thursday before the program even aired.

"He expressed his disappointment and apologized," Shriver told Friday's edition of ABC's Good Morning America. "He was very sincere."

Loaded with one-liners, President Barack Obama visited the Tonight Show on Thursday night and likened his new job to competing on a reality show: "I do think in Washington, it's a little bit like American Idol. But everybody is Simon Cowell."

The appearance by the First Guest provided Jay Leno with what he called "the most exciting show of my life" – and fodder for jokes and banter. "A lot of people were surprised that the president came to NBC," said Leno. "You'd think by this time, he'd be tired of big companies on the brink of disaster."

Obama, dressed in a dark blue suit with a red tie flipped up the tails of jacket when he sat down, then crossed his legs and talked about the perks of the office, starting with his new mode of transportation.

"How cool is it to fly in Air Force One?" asked Leno.

Jay Leno to Give Free Show in Detroit

Originally posted 03/10/2009 03:30PM

Jay Leno spent much of last fall making fun of the winless Detroit Lions, but next month, he'll see firsthand how those jokes play in the struggling Motor City.

Leno announced Monday on The Tonight Show that he will perform a free concert on April 7 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. He picked Michigan because the state has the nation's highest unemployment rate, at 11.6 percent.

"I like Detroit. It's one of those old cities," Leno tells PEOPLE. "And when you're an auto guy like me, that city is Jerusalem."

What's so funny about Jay Leno going to primetime?

Everything, according to the outgoing Tonight Show host and his late-night replacement, Conan O'Brien.

"We're going to be doing a new show in the fall," Leno said in his monologue Tuesday. "We'll start at 10 p.m. right after the last hour of the Today show.

And, he added, "As you may have heard there were rumblings that I was leaving NBC and going to ABC, and let me tell you something, those were nothing but rumors started by a disgruntled employee: ME!"

NBC announced that Leno will stay with the struggling network and host a new primetime comedy/talk show five nights a week starting in the fall of 2009.

"We're going to try it," Leno said later in the show. "If it works, great. If it doesn't, we've had a hell of a ride. For the last 17 years, it's been a privilege to say, 'Please stay tuned for Conan,' and I'm glad I'll be able to do that again."

John McCain: 'I've Been Sleeping Like a Baby'

Originally posted 11/11/2008 09:10PM

While he may have lost his bid for the White House, John McCain did not lose his sense of humor.

"I've been sleeping like a baby," the GOP candidate said on The Tonight Show Tuesday. "I sleep two hours, wake up and cry. Sleep two hours, wake up and cry."

The Arizona senator's 14th visit to the show brought a loud and spontaneous ovation from Jay Leno's special Veteran's Day audience of U.S. service men and women.

Noting that Americans "don't like a sore loser," McCain defended his choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate and of Joe the Plumber as his campaign everyman.
