Yes, the cast of The Office heard the return rumors too – and no, they weren’t going to spoil the surprise.
"It was so thrilling. We all just flat-out lied," John Krasinski tells PEOPLE with a laugh at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center's The One Hundred Gala, held Wednesday in Boston.
"I lied to Letterman! I have to apologize to him for that at some point. It was just one of those things that we all vowed and had to protect," the actor says of keeping Steve Carell's last hurrah under wraps. "Look what happened – it was the best. The 'that's what she said' was the perfect use of Steve."

It was love at first audition for Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski.
Fischer, who plays Pam to Krasinski's Jim on The Office, isn't sure their characters would have become the fan-favorites they are if he hadn't been chosen to play her husband.
"I was paired up with John often and I thought this was good because he was my favorite Jim," Fischer explains of the final round of eight actors – four Pams and four Jims – on Thursday's episode of The Jeff Probst Show.
"On the second day, John whispered to me, 'You're my favorite Pam. I hope you get it.' "

Appearing on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Jenna Fischer was asked by host Jay Leno if her parents were thrilled over their first grandchild.
"This is the second grandchild," The Office star corrected, "but first grandson."
When Leno jumped on the word grandson, Fischer confirmed that she and husband Lee Kirk are expecting a boy.
"This is the exclusive, Jay," says Fischer, 37, who appears in the upcoming film A Little Help. "When I went to my movie premiere the other day a reporter asked me if I knew what I was having, and I said I do, but I’m not sharing that yet because I’m [going to] have Jay be the first to know.”

Jenna Fischer has babies on the brain.
That's not too surprising, considering her character, Pam, on The Office and her sister Emily both had kids recently – which got Fischer thinking more about becoming a mom herself.
"I already wanted kids, but even more so now," the actress, 36, tells Redbook in its March issue, on newsstands Feb. 15.

Romance seemed to be in the air Saturday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles as stars and their spouses showed their sweet affection for each other.
Kevin Bacon was a bundle of nerves before his name was announced as best male actor in a TV movie or miniseries for his role in HBO's Taking Chance, but wife Kyra Sedgwick kept him looking his best. How? "I had to blot his face a little," she admitted to PEOPLE at the afterparty.
Mad Men star Christina Hendricks's new husband, Geoffrey Arend, was clearly his wife's biggest fan. "I feel like the luckiest man ever. She's such a cutie pie," he raved. "When Michael C. Hall said 'I want to thank my wife for wearing that dress,' I feel that way every single awards show." Hendricks agreed, telling PEOPLE, "He's been feeling me all night."
