It's not the first time Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer have reunited after a split, but the couple are simply "enjoying their friendship," says a source close to the singer. "They've been talking for a while – they're very friendly."

Adds another source, "They've remained close."

The duo recently spent a night together late last month at New York City's Bowery Hotel. "Jen was there on the arm of John and they were all very lovey," says an onlooker. "She was in casual clothing as was he, and she seemed very comfortable around his crowd of friends."

No, she wasn't auditioning for American Idol but during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Wednesday, Jennifer Aniston did end up singing a little.

"They promised me you wouldn't do this to me," Aniston, 40, told DeGeneres after revealing that she is learning to sing and play a dobro for an upcoming film role. But despite her protests, Aniston belted out a few bars of the George Gershwin standard "I've Got a Crush on You," then retorted, "I'm absolutely mortified that you did that to me."

Ellen's verdict? "I would put you through to the next round," DeGeneres said, referencing her new gig as an American Idol judge.

Expecting diva-like antics from Jennifer Aniston? No way, says her costar in the upcoming Love Happens.

"She was very easygoing, very effortless," Aaron Eckhart, 41, told PEOPLE at the movie's premiere in Westwood, Calif., Tuesday. "I think that's the word I want to use: effortless."

He explains, "She keeps good people around her. She's interested. She asks questions. She gets outside of herself and lives, I would say at the very least, an interesting life. It's not really always her own. She deals with it very well."

In between photo ops with Eckhart, Aniston, 40, attended Tuesday's premiere solo, smiling, taking pictures with fans, signing autographs and talking to press – though she kept her chatter brief.

Don't call Jennifer Aniston a lonely girl, or you may get a choice word or two from her.

"It's just their headline of 'Lonely Girl' that's sort of bulls---," Aniston, 40, told E! Online, referring to her interview in the September issue of Elle.

The interview, in which Aniston talks about her love life, was conducted by her best friend and producing partner, Kristin Hahn. "I'm not going to ignore the pink elephant in the living room. It's fine. I can take it," she told Hahn. "If I'm the emblem for 'this is what it looks like to be the lonely girl getting on with her life,' so be it."

Jennifer Aniston Ready to Reveal Her Singing Voice

Jennifer Aniston will be singing and playing the guitar in an upcoming film, and she makes one guarantee about her big-screen musical debut: "I can carry a tune."

Aniston is both starring in and producing The Goree Girls – the story of a real-life 1940s-era country music group comprised of all-female prison inmates – and is currently honing her singing skills as the production prepares to roll in January.

"It won't be bad," Aniston says while promoting her latest film Love Happens. "Here's the good news: the band – they weren't musicians. They basically created a band in prison in order to get paroled. So you're dealing with new singing voices and new instrument playing and somehow they find a way and become a huge phenomenon. It's a true story."

In her new film Love Happens, Jennifer Aniston has a disastrous first date with Aaron Eckhart onscreen, but things haven't gotten quite so awful for her in real-life.

"I have to say that luckily I haven't had one," Aniston says of first-date disasters, beyond "just being bored." She adds: "It's that thing where you just want to go home and they're like 'So, do you want to go somewhere afterwards?' And it's like, 'No.'"

The actress, 40, says she's never had to use a friend as a lifeline to call with a made-up emergency during a bad date. "Oh, God, no!" she laughed during a promotional interview for Love Happens. "I haven't done that, but that's really funny! That happened in The Breakup!"

Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler were seen "hand in hand" this weekend at The Jane Hotel in Manhattan's Meatpacking District, a source tells PEOPLE. The two are currently filming The Bounty in New York City.

"Jen and Gerry went out on Saturday night," says the source, who, noting that the cozy couple were surrounded by such others as Kirsten Dunst, also said Aniston and Butler "had cocktails and … They were hand in hand."

Aniston's rep, however, says the pair were simply out with pals. "Jennifer was out with many others from the film and they were not holding hands," says Stephen Huvane. "Gerry was one of many from the film there."

The newest "in" spot, The Jane has been attracting the likes of Mischa Barton and Kate Winslet, among others.

According to another source, Aniston, 40, and Butler, 39, were also spotted dining on the Lower East Side at Freemans, another hot spot, before cozying up at the hotel lounge.

Forget the Ivy, Beso or any other hot Hollywood eatery. "My friends love coming over [to my house], because they get fed," says Jennifer Aniston. "It's the best restaurant in town."

The star, 40, makes the modest claim in the September issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, on newsstands Aug. 11 – and declares that she likes to eat at home, too. And she seldom dines alone.

"Her friends are in and out all the time," says Jewels Elmore, who, with her sister Jill, works as Aniston's private chef. "Jen's a homebody. It's been so much fun to create a place where everybody feels comfortable, like one big family."
