Jennifer Garner Sneaks Veggies Into Daughter's Food

Originally posted 09/29/2009 04:45PM

As the new spokesperson for Save the Children's "Make Time for CHANGE" campaign, Jennifer Garner is helping develop healthier lifestyles for kids living in poverty by implementing resources for healthy eating and exercise habits. In her personal life, the actress also promotes healthy eating at home with daughter Violet, 3, by creatively sneaking vegetables into her meals.

"One healthy snack that I love to make at home is a smoothie with spinach," Garner tells PEOPLE. "You use a banana, a bunch of mango and a huge handfuls of spinach so it's green. But it tastes like mango and banana and the kids are really, really into the color. They also don't taste the spinach at all."

Though Garner says her daughter "mostly does alright" in terms of eating her veggies, the Invention of Lying actress, like many busy parents, is the first to admit that it's difficult to consistently eat and prepare healthy meals. However, she says it's crucial for children living in poverty to develop healthier lifestyles. As a mom of two, Garner says she feels even more dedicated in using her time to help the non-profit organization.

Jennifer Garner may downplay her mom abilities, but she has no shortage of ideas about encouraging her kids to think creatively, a friend says.

"Every day, you feel like you are off-balance one way or another," Garner, at Monday's Hollywood premiere of her comedy The Invention of Lying, told PEOPLE about the secret to juggling career and motherhood. "You just take it one day at a time. Oh gosh, let me know when you figure that out. I don't think anyone has it."

Looking slim and radiant in a Gucci dress and Cartier jewels, Garner, 37, attended the movie opening without husband Ben Affleck. She gave birth in January to the couple's second daughter, Seraphina, who joined Violet, 3½.

Jennifer Garner Knows Her Red Sox Players!

Originally posted 09/22/2009 09:00AM

Pardon the pun, but Jennifer Garner hit a home run on The Jay Leno Show Monday night when forced to recite the starting lineup for the Boston Red Sox in order to earn the right to plug her new flick, The Invention of Lying.

"Just to annoy" husband and diehard Sox fan Ben Affleck, Leno not only forced her to don a rival New York Yankees cap, but she also had to hold a photo of "her least favorite" Yankee player, Derek Jeter.

Impressively, Garner pulled off the challenge with commentary about her favorites – hey, she admits they watch every game! – but refused to give the Jeter photo to Affleck "as a gift," proving just how smart she really is.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck may be among the busiest actors in Hollywood, but their first-born daughter Violet has her own ideas about what her parents do for a living.

"The older one thinks that I work in a trailer. She thinks that my work is getting hair and makeup done," Garner, 37, told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival press conference for her new movie The Invention of Lying, costarring Rob Lowe, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and Ricky Gervais, who directed it.

Violet, 3 ½, also thinks mom's job is to bow to audiences. "If you ask her what I do, she'll say she remembers me bowing on stage when I did a show in New York, and so she'll say, 'My mom sometimes will bow on stage and sometimes she gets her hair and makeup done,'" says Garner. "It's a great job!"

Ben Affleck may have many talents when it comes to parenting 3-year-old daughter Violet, but according to his wife Jennifer Garner hairdressing isn't one of them.

"Ben will do the school run," Garner, 35, tells InStyle in its May issue, on sale Friday, of her family's hectic morning routine. "He dresses her and does her hair. It's pretty funny. You can always tell when he has been at it, just two random barrettes hanging in there. It's so sweet."

Adds Garner: "Ben can be pretty clueless when it comes to my clothes or makeup. But when he does notice and says something, he's so sweet that I forgive him."
