Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Hudson are kicking off 2013 with an inspiring new TV commercial.

While much of the nation will resolve to shed some extra pounds this year, Simpson, 32, and Hudson, 31, are showing off their hard work in spot for Weight Watchers spot, for which they are both official spokespersons.

"I was overweight my whole life," Hudson says in the ad, which will air starting Jan. 3.

Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Hudson have a lot in common, specifically when it comes to balancing their careers with motherhood.

Now Simpson, 32, and Hudson, 31, have one more similarity to add to the list – they've both shed serious pounds thanks to Weight Watchers.

The spokeswomen for the weight loss company met when they shot their first joint advertisement – which will be available on PEOPLE.com on Wednesday – and discussed their lifelong struggles with their weight and body image.

The new trailer for season 2 of Smash opens with Katharine McPhee's character, Karen Cartwright, telling Megan Hilty's character, Ivy Lynn, to stay out of her elevator.

And that's not even the biggest diva moment!

That honor would go to show newcomer Jennifer Hudson, who will play Broadway sensation (and two-time Tony winner) Veronica Moore. There will be no shortage of powerhouse vocals from Hudson, who belts out more than a few high notes in the trailer. And looks gorgeous doing it.

Jennifer Hudson surprised guests at the Hearst Corporation's 125th anniversary celebration in New York on Tuesday.

Wearing a gold lace dress, the singer performed a number of songs including the hit "And I Am Telling You" from Dreamgirls.

Gayle King, Ralph and Ricky Lauren and Mayor Mike Bloomberg were all in attendance for the event, which included a private screening of Citizen Hearst, a documentary on media magnate William Randolph Hearst.

Chef Marcus Samuelsson catered the soiree, which included a liquid nitrogen ice cream bar.

Described by the judge as possessing a soul "as barren as dark space," William Balfour was sentenced Tuesday to three life sentences for the 2008 murders of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew.

"You have the heart of an arctic night," Cook County Circuit Judge Charles Burns told Hudson's former brother-in-law during the sentencing in a Chicago courtroom.

Hudson, the first witness at the trial, sat in court next to her sister – Balfour's former wife and the mother of the youngest victim, 7-year-old Julian King – and dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

With justice served in the murders of Jennifer Hudson's family, her fiancé David Otunga says the couple now is "very excited" for their wedding, in which 2-year-old son, David Jr. , "will definitely be a huge part."

"That was something that was hanging over our heads for so long, and now we feel like we can finally breathe a sigh of relief," Otunga, 32, tells PEOPLE. "Everything is good now."

In honor of their deceased family members, the couple started the Julian D. King Fountain to donate Christmas toys and school supplies for underprivileged children.

As for Jennifer, he tells PEOPLE, "I'm blessed to have such a wonderful woman in my life who cares for our child so lovingly."

Jennifer Hudson's Ex-Brother-in-Law Convicted of Family Murders

Jennifer Hudson's former brother-in-law was convicted Friday of three counts of murder in the shooting deaths of her mother, brother and nephew.

The jury in Chicago delivered its verdict against William Balfour, 31, after about 18 hours of deliberations. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Hudson and her sister Julia said in a statement: "It is our prayer that the Lord will forgive Mr. Balfour of these heinous acts and bring his heart into repentance someday."

Balfour was charged with the murders of Hudson's mother Darnell Donerson, brother Jason Hudson and 7-year-old nephew Julian King in 2008.

The graphic 911 call Jennifer Hudson's sister made when she discovered her mother's dead body was released to the public Monday by the judge overseeing the trial of William Balfour, who has pleaded not guilty of the brutal murder of the actress' mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.

"Somebody's killed my mother! Somebody's killed my mother! Please!" Julia Hudson can be heard screaming from her family's home on Chicago's South Side. "Please help me! Please … please send an ambulance, yes! Please!"

"I just got home from work and there's a bullet … there's a bullet hole in our front door," she also says, at times gasping for air. "She's on the floor, I see blood coming from her head … I didn't touch her, I just ran out of the house."
