Primetime's newest singing competition, ABC's Duets, premiered Thursday with the show's four mentors – Clarkson", John Legend, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke – taking the stage to perform one of their own songs with each of their two protégés.
Clarkson quickly found herself the underdog. The former American Idol winner's teammates, Jordan Meredith and Jason Farol, claimed the bottom two spots based on scores from the other coaches after their renditions of Clarkson's "Stronger" and "Breaking Your Own Heart," respectively.
One of Nettles's contestants, J Rome, took the top spot after his duet with Nettles on Sugarland's "Tonight."

The debut of her ABC singing competition Duets is still six weeks away, but Kelly Clarkson has found two potential talents for her team – and she's already campaigning for a win. (On the show, Clarkson will compete with Robin Thicke, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Nettles to find the best duet partner, who will win a recording contract with Hollywood Records.)
At a concert Tuesday in San Diego, the pop star, 29, surprised fans by bringing Jason Farol and Julianna Gutierrez on stage to sing with her. "I've auditioned and auditioned, and I've come down to a couple of people I'm very, very excited about," Clarkson told the crowd. "But my test for them is to put them in front of an audience."

There's a new singing competition coming to TV.
Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Nettles have been picked to search for musical protégés on Duets, which will premiere on ABC this summer.
Instead of sitting on a judges' panel, these four superstars will head out across America to find two singers to be their duet partners. Each week, the celebrity and one of their charges will take the stage and perform in front of a live studio audience.
"The simple fact that I get to go out and find two people I believe in, sing with them every week and help them accomplish their dream is an amazing thing I can't wait to be a part of," Clarkson says in a press release from ABC.

The Sugarland singer, 37, quietly tied the knot Saturday in a small, sunset ceremony in Tennessee.
Wearing an Alexander McQueen gown, Nettles married entrepreneur Justin Miller at a chapel nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in front of an intimate group of close family and friends, including bandmate Kristian Bush.
Miller is a former model who's been dating Nettles for more than two years. He appeared in the video for the band's 2006 single, "Want To," and accompanied the singer to the CMA Awards on Nov. 9, where Sugarland took home the award for vocal duo of the year.

Originally posted 04/03/2011 10:25PM
At Sunday night's 46th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, some of the music industry's finest cowgirls, rock stars and pop hit makers pushed genres to the side to make duet magic.
Unexpected mashups aside – who knew Rihanna had twang? – whose performance was the perfect balance?
Brad Paisley and Alabama
Brad Paisley and rockers Alabama brought the spirit of the south – and a gritty guitar jam – to Vegas with their duet, "Old Alabama." Cowboy hats in place, the kings of country kicked off the show on a high note.
Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler
It was a match made in American Idol heaven! Season four Idol winner Carrie Underwood rocked the stage with judge Steven Tyler to her hit "Undo It" and Aerosmith classic "Walk This Way." They each belted into microphones adorned with Tyler's signature scarves and nearly shared a tender smooch – which was, of course, a joke.

The country duo Sugarland are pulling back the curtain to reveal the process behind making their new album – and PEOPLE.com has a first look at the footage.
Living Liner Notes – a live version of the writings usually found in a CD booklet – offers an inside look at the pair in their Atlanta studio during the February recording process of their fourth album, The Incredible Machine, due Oct. 19.
"The Living Liner Notes are exactly what they sound like they are, in the sense that, just like in an album, you receive the liner notes that talk about each song in different and varying degrees of detail," Jennifer Nettles, 36, tells PEOPLE. "We actually did living versions of those where we talk about each song."
