Dazzling effects, strong stories and bold heroes mean bubkes unless they inspire us. Thank the gods, The Avengers is just what it ought to be – inspired.
After five recent films about the solo exploits of Marvel heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo, outclassing Edward Norton), The Avengers weaves its narrative threads into a vibrant display of effects wizardry with characters to love and wit to spare.

Robert Downey Jr. Wins Over the Most Avengers Fans as Iron Man

In real-life, Robert Downey Jr. doesn't possess superhuman strength, genius intellect or that famed power suit.
But Iron Man, his on-screen Avengers alter-ego gifted with his body, brains and superhero wardrobe, isn't lacking – and fans of the franchise agree.
According to data collected on the movie's Facebook page, 37 percent of fans polled would most like to be Iron Man (identity: Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark) if they could transform into any Marvel superhero.

Jeremy Renner's French Bulldog Puppy Dies at Baseball Game

Jeremy Renner is mourning a friend gone too soon.
The actor's 8-month-old miniature French bulldog, Franklin, died Saturday at a Little League baseball game, TMZ reports.
Renner's friend and business partner Kristoffer Winters was dog-sitting and took the puppy to his nephew's game. The cream-colored dog was running around in hot temperatures and later began to vomit and convulse.

Jeremy Renner Escapes Bar Brawl in Thailand

A night of barhopping in Thailand took a dangerous turn for Jeremy Renner and his pals early Wednesday morning.
The Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol star, 40, was hanging out with friends – including Vorasit Issara, general manager of the Sri Panwa Resort – at Rachada Pub in Phuket Town, when Issara reportedly dropped a glass on the floor, leading to an attack from six members of the bar staff.
According to the Phuket Gazette, Issara, 31, was allegedly stabbed in the stomach by Suchart Palae, 26, and attacked on the neck by Nareubate Tednok, 18, with a rotor axe.

The stars came out for the fifth anniversary celebration of modern steakhouse STK in New York City. Among the revelers: Jeremy Renner, who was spotted with a hot brunette by his side all night, while a low-key Ryan Phillippe was hanging out with his buddies at a VIP table. Guests dined on signature dishes while tunes were spun by DJ Cassidy. Nicky Hilton especially enjoyed the music at her table and was dancing in her seat. – Kristin Boehm

Renner, who will soon star in the next installment of the Bourne series, The Bourne Legacy, chatted up the actor for some time. "Lindsay looked fabulous and was polite, sweet and friendly to everyone at the restaurant," a source tells PEOPLE. After dinner, Lohan split from her sister to party off the dinner calories at LIV nightclub in the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel.

But you don't have to go out to experience the booming cocktail culture. The owners of the New York restaurant Employees Only have compiled a book of drink recipes, titled Speakeasy, straight out of the Jazz Age. That's when "American cocktails were at their peak," says co-author Jason Kosmas.
