It's been just over a year since an affair cost him his marriage to Sandra Bullock and fallout from the scandal upended his world. "Everything got ripped to shreds," Jesse James tells PEOPLE in a candid interview, speaking from his home outside of Austin, Texas. "I was at my breaking point."
A 30-day stint at Sierra Tucson treatment center in Arizona not only helped James, 42, cope at the height of the crisis but, as he writes in a new memoir, American Outlaw, it also shed light on his abusive childhood and turbulent life marked by anger and shame.
"I always felt out of place my whole life," says James, who still felt unworthy despite rising to fame and success as CEO of West Coast Choppers custom motorcycle outfit and host of Discovery Channel's Monster Garage. "I never felt successful, never felt I deserved anything."

Jesse James has been called a lot of things – chopper king, TV star, (very) bad boy – but nobody expected his latest title: author. With his memoir, American Outlaw, hitting stores May 3, James promises readers a raw and wild ride.
"I've lived a pretty crazy life," James, 41, tells PEOPLE of his hardscrabble journey that spans a volatile upbringing, addiction struggles, failed marriages, artistic success and fame and the salvation of fatherhood.
"My life has been defined by many things and not just the events of the last year," says James, whose marriage to Sandra Bullock ended in divorce last spring. "I just wanted [the memoir] to be a good story, a page-turner and hopefully people will see it as that."

Start your engines. Motorcycle king Jesse James and tattoo artist Kat Von D are going to be married.
"You know sometimes the public and press gets it wrong. This is one of those times. 2010 was actually the best year of my life because I fell in love with my best friend. An amazing woman who stood behind me when the world turned their backs," James tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I have never met anyone so kind and loving and committed to making the world a better place every day. My love for her is beyond description. So honored that she said 'yes.' Growing old with her is going to be a f----n' blast!"
The pair have been dating since last summer, following the collapse of James's marriage to Oscar winner Sandra Bullock. Their divorce was finalized last June.

For a couple who were rumored to have broken up, Jesse James and Kat Von D appeared awfully cozy at an intimate lunch Saturday.
James, 41, and Von D, 28, turned up at El Compadre Mexican restaurant in West Hollywood, where they chatted and kissed at their table.
It was the first public outing for the motorcycle mogul and the L.A. Ink star since split rumors started flying earlier this month after Von D was spotted getting close to ex-boyfriend Nikki Sixx and rumored former flame Bam Margera.

Kat Von D proclaimed her love for Jesse James only last month, but is trouble already brewing between the tattooed twosome?
The couple were last seen together lunching at The Counter in West Hollywood on Oct. 3. At the time, "they looked very happy and kept kissing," a source tells PEOPLE.
But a source says that Von D isn't happy about James's having moved to Austin, Texas, and is losing patience with their "weekend fly-back-and-forth relationship." And since the pair's last outing, the L.A. Ink star, 28, has been spotted getting close to other guys.

Kat Von D may be in love with boyfriend Jesse James – but she is not expecting his child.
"They've only been dating for a few weeks. She is not pregnant. That's absolutely absurd," her rep tells PEOPLE.
Earlier this week, online reports surfaced speculating that the L.A. Ink star could be pregnant after a photo revealed a possible baby bump.

Jesse James is entering a new phase of his life.
"It sure looks like he's moved on," a James insider tells PEOPLE about the motorcycle mogul, who is settling into his new relationship with Kat Von D and his new home in Austin, Texas. "It doesn't look like he's hiding anything now."
Just two months after his divorce from Sandra Bullock was finalized in an Austin courtroom, James's self-professed broken heart looks to be on the mend. He was initially cautious about going public with his romance with the L.A. Ink star, says the source, and he asked Von D to remove a Tweet confirming that the two were dating after they were spotted having dinner together in Las Vegas on Aug. 14.

It's back to the real world for Jesse James and Kat Von D.
After spending Labor Day weekend joined at the hip, the couple shared a goodbye kiss when Von D dropped James at LAX Monday.
With their love apparently in full bloom, the pair packed the weekend with music, food and PDA.
On Friday, James and Von D ate lunch a deux and were later spotted filling up at a local gas station. The next day, the lovebirds soaked up the sun in Orange County, Calif., and were seen kissing and holding hands after hitting two music events – the Sutra5 and the Pacific Festival.

After a "smooch-filled" lunch at L.A.'s Urth Caffé, Jesse James and girlfriend Kat Von D headed down the street for some hands-on shopping at J. Gerard Design Studio and Peace Gallery. While the LA Ink star browsed couture gowns, James doted on her. "He kept on kissing her and wrapping his arms around her from behind," the onlooker says of the duo, who "were finishing each other's sentences." Adds the onlooker: "The romantic chemistry was palpable." The two also picked up his and hers "Rebel with a Cause" T-shirts, and James bought Von D a glass bead lariat-style necklace, which she wore out the door.

It's love for Jesse James and Kat Von D, according to the LA Ink star.
"Jesse is only my ninth boyfriend. I don't hang out with anybody unless I am in love," Kat told PEOPLE at the opening of her Wonderland gallery in West Hollywood on Thursday.
Asked if she thinks the motorcycle mogul, who accompanied Von D to the gallery opening, is "The One" for her, she answered, "I believe he is, so yeah."
As for how and when she first knew her feelings for James were so strong, she said, "Was it when we were playing Scrabble? I don't remember. But it was something like that – when we both realized how nerdy we were."
