At 38, Jewel says she's learned to embrace her imperfections.
"I wore prosthetic teeth when filming as June Carter Cash and I found it funny that people thought that in a matter of two weeks, I was somehow able to straighten my teeth!" she says in Health's May issue.
"I don't think that my teeth represent my defiance of the Man ... I just don't like pain, and I never wanted braces," she explains.

The issue of gun violence is an extremely public and political one. But for many, including Jewel, it's also deeply personal.
The singer, 38, has written a short piece on the topic for the 1simplechange website in which she reveals how she plans to help her son Kase deal with the underlying trouble at the root of so many shootings – unchecked anger.
"Anger shootings," she writes, often happen because the shooter never learned to deal with emotional problems in non-violent ways.

When you grow up surrounded by animals, you learn important life lessons, says folk singer Jewel.
"I think animals teach you about love," she tells PEOPLE. "I think it's great to have chores and it's great to take care of something. It's an easy way to teach somebody to not be selfish."
The singer, her husband Ty Murray and their toddler son have learned so much from the 200 cows, 10 horses, two donkeys and five dogs they keep at the 2,400-acre Texas ranch. While little Kase has just learned all the funny sounds the animals make, he's well on his way to understanding what ranch life is all about.

Jewel looked almost unrecognizable on Tuesday when she Tweeted a first look photo of herself portraying June Carter Cash in an upcoming Lifetime movie based on the book, Anchored in Love.
Following in the footsteps of Reese Witherspoon, who won an Oscar for her role in Walk the Line, the singer-songwriter, 38, will play the late Johnny Cash's wife.
Sporting long, curly, dark hair – the opposite of her usual look – Jewel wrote, "Here I am as June in my trailer with her blue eyes and perfect teeth #ringoffire."

Talk about big shoes to fill.
In an upcoming Lifetime movie, Jewel will portray country legend June Carter Cash, CBS and the Associated Press report. The role of Cash won Reese Witherspoon an Oscar for her performance in 2005's Walk the Line.
Based on the book Anchored in Love, which John Carter Cash wrote about his mother, the movie will begin filming this summer in Atlanta and is scheduled to premiere later this year.
Matt Ross, who portrays Charles Montgomery on American Horror Story, will play Johnny Cash opposite the Grammy-winning Jewel.
