Jill Hennessy has come a long way from playing music on the streets.
This fall, the multitalented singer, songwriter and actress not only released her second studio album, I Do, but she's also recurring on CBS' Madam Secretary as Jane Fellows, a Defense Intelligence Agency handler to Tim Daly's Henry McCord.
"She's a lot tougher than I am," Hennessy tells PEOPLE of her character. "She has to make real important life-and-death decisions for the greater good and sometimes sacrifice other things that I would have a very difficult time doing."

It's been 25 years since Law & Order first hit the airwaves, making avid fans and amateur sleuths out of us all.
Though the groundbreaking cop drama centered on some of New York City's most gruesome crime stories, when stars Dann Florek, S. Epatha Merkerson, Carolyn McCormick and Jill Hennessy think back on the show's early days, all they can do is laugh.
In celebration of the show's September anniversary and WE TV's current Law & Order Binge-A-Thon, PEOPLE sat down with the four actors, who dished on everything from cracking jokes during gory corpse scenes to scary run-ins with real life criminals.

Audiences know her from her series Crossing Jordan, but actress Jill Hennessy says that her first love was singing.
"It's what I did before I acted," she told PEOPLE Monday at a party to celebrate Mario Batali's new book, Spain … A Culinary Roadtrip, at Bon Appetit's Supper Club and Café. "To be honest I never thought the acting thing would get off the ground."
Hennessy, 39, said she recorded an album, which she describes as "sort of alternative, folk, rock" in Austin with producer Patrick McCarthy, whom she met through Batali.

A pregnant Jill Hennessy, looking radiant in a black dress and high heels, stepped out Tuesday night with hubby Paolo Mastropietro, and the discussion quickly turned to her unborn baby boy – namely, what the heck she's going to call her second child.
"I honestly wish I had a good name picked out right now," she said at City Harvest's Bid Against Hunger fundraiser in New York City. "His last name is Mastropietro and we're racking our brains. If you have anything that rhymes with the last name, let me know.
Her current plan? "What we're going to do is we have a short list and we are going to wait for the delivery and hold up the list to the kid's face and try to compare his face to something that works."

She sports million of dollars' worth of Chopard's jewelry in The Princess Diaries 2, but Anne Hathaway says that in real life, she has "a very strange relationship with jewelry, probably because of my fascination with Wonder Woman." Say what? "I believe that accessories are magical," she says. "Different pieces come into my life and they have special significance to me and I wear them to death." Well, okay, but let's get back to the Wonder Woman obsession. "I have a Wonder Woman toothbrush. I used to have a SpongeBob toothbrush. Then I lost it. So Wonder Woman was the replacement," the 21-year-old actress reveals. So now that comic book characters are all over the movies, what with the Spider-Man and X-Men franchises and the upcoming remake of Superman, how about Anne Hathaway as Wonder Woman on the big screen? "That would be wonderful," she says. "It would be fun to fly through the air and kick people's butts while wearing the good old red, white and blue."
