Many of the residents in Washington County, Arkansas, are reeling from a scandal that has put them – and their most famous residents – under a microscope.

There are few inside the Duggars' county without an opinion about the explosive reveal that Michelle and Jim Bob's eldest child Josh was investigated as a teen for the alleged molestation of five underage girls.

The reactions are wide-ranging: One young mother, while herding her two small children in the parking lot of a Walmart, tells PEOPLE of Josh: "I think he should rot in Hell!"

Though the future of their show remains uncertain, the Duggars still have a spot on TV – the reality stars are being ripped apart by comedians.

The Nightly Show's Larry Wilmore, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart and the brains behind Funny or Die have all ridiculed the family's handling of a dark scandal this week.

The ripple effect of the shocking molestation scandal embroiling 19 Kids and Counting continues this week as more high-profile advertisers have stated their intention to distance themselves from TLC's once dominant reality show.

Companies including Ace Hardware, David's Bridal and Pure Leaf Iced Tea announced on social media that they would no longer advertise on the show in the wake of the news that eldest son Josh Duggar had been investigated for child molestation as a teen.

As the fate of the series remains in question, TLC has temporarily pulled all episodes of the show from the air and online; streaming service Hulu has also removed 19 Kids from its website. If the series returns, numerous advertisers made it clear they are actively working to pull all ads from the show that has been a tentpole for the cable channel.

The future of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting is on shaky ground following the revelation that a felony investigation was opened in 2006 after Josh Duggar was accused by his victims of molesting five underage girls.

In statements to PEOPLE, the Duggar family indirectly addressed the closed investigation by referring to the multiple incidents listed in the report unearthed by InTouch Weekly as "teenage mistakes."

Michelle and Jim Bob are "devastated" over the leak, a source close to the family tells PEOPLE. "They know that they did the best they could, but it doesn't mean they're not filled with regret."

What's at Stake for the Duggars if TLC Cancels 19 Kids and Counting?

Originally posted 05/26/2015 06:20PM

Just days after news broke that 19 Kids and Counting star Josh Duggar was allegedly involved in a shocking molestation scandal, TLC pulled the hit reality series from its schedule. Though no permanent decision has been made yet on the fate of the show, the Duggars stand to lose a lot when it comes to the family's profitable brand.

A source close to the series confirms they could lose an estimated $25,000 to $45,000 per episode, but that amount doesn't include any of other sources of income related to their 19 Kids and Counting fame. There were 22 episodes in season 9 of the show, which wrapped up May 19 and there have been 227 episodes total.

Online Commenter Warned About Josh Duggar Molestation Accusations 8 Years Ago

Originally posted 05/24/2015 06:05PM

When allegations that 19 Kids and Counting star Josh Duggar molested five young girls resurfaced this week, fans of the TLC reality show were shocked. To the millions of viewers who've tuned in each week, the Duggars personified family values, from their strict rules about modesty to their dedication to religion.

The illusion was shattered Thursday, when Josh, 27, admitted he "acted inexcusably" as a teenager. But rumors of the former Christian lobbyist's past are nothing new: They first surfaced online eight years ago. As Gawker's Defamer points out, a commenter called "Alice" recounted the allegations on a blog, ibiblio.org, in May 2007. Other sites such as FreeJinger.org have long cited Alice's comments.
