When Teresa Giudice was in prison, the cooks found maggots in the kitchen near the rice. Naturally, Giudice never wanted to eat rice again, which wasn't a big loss.

"I was starting to cut out the carbs, so it worked out anyway," she tells PEOPLE in an exclusive video about her life in prison.

Eating healthy wasn't always easy. In the morning, the options were oatmeal or bran cereal. For dinner, the choices ranged from hot dogs to tacos, and occasionally salad would make it onto the menu.

"In the beginning I tried everything, and then I started staying away from the meat," Real Housewives of New Jersey star says.

Teresa Giudice had a strong support system while she was prison, especially from her Real Housewives of New Jersey costars.

"They've been amazing," Giudice, 43, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive video. "They've reached out before, during and after."

The most supportive housewife was her sister-in-law Melissa Gorga, she says. Giudice and Gorga haven't always gotten along in the past, and this entire experience helped them repair their relationship.

"I think Melissa and I just realized what's important in life, that family is the most important thing." Giudice says. "We're just going to both be there for each other and not let anything get in the way."

"At the beginning, some of the inmates would do my hair, you know, just do it as a favor. Then, I started going to the salon," Giudice, 43, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week's issue.

"But it was really small," she adds. "It had one chair and then two dryers."
