Nicole Richie and Joel Madden Build a Playground

They may have their hands full with newborn Sparrow and 21-month old Harlow, but Nicole Richie and Joel Madden took time away from home on Thursday to take care of some less privileged kids: After 13 months of fundraising, the couple broke ground on a new playground at a homeless shelter in downtown Los Angeles.
"It's so rewarding to see the smile on these kids faces," Richie, 28, tells PEOPLE.
Several of the pint-sized inhabitants of Beyond Shelter's Broadway Village 2, a shelter in an L.A. neighborhood with the highest concentration of crime and poverty, turned out to celebrate the happy news that they would soon have a place to play.

Six weeks after welcoming their first son, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden – along with their 21-month-old daughter Harlow – are showing off the latest addition to their family, Sparrow James Midnight Madden.
"I couldn't be happier," Richie tells PEOPLE. "The only thing you want is for your kids to be healthy and happy, and they are. I'm right where I belong."
In an interview at their home in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles, Richie, 28, and Madden, 30, her boyfriend and front man of the band Good Charlotte, say they are deprived of sleep, but grateful their daughter Harlow is now fawning over a baby brother.

Forget clubbing or fronting Good Charlotte – the most fun thing in Joel Madden's life right now is being a dad.
"I love kids, I love working with kids, I love being around kids," he said at the Noble Awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday.
And daughter Harlow enjoys being a big sister to 1-month-old Sparrow James Midnight, who was born in September to Madden, 30, and Nicole Richie.

After Nicole Richie and Joel Madden named their son Sparrow James Midnight Madden, speculation has brewed over how they came up with the avian moniker. The answer may have arrived, appropriately, in a Tweet.
"A song for the little songbird," Madden writes on his Twitter page, and links to "Sparrow" from Simon & Garfunkel.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have taken to the social-networking service to gush over their newest addition, Sparrow James Midnight Madden, born Wednesday.
"Geuss who's back ... Oh i'm sorry we were only having a little baby boy," Madden, 30, wrote Wednesday morning.
Two hours later, he boasted about his newborn's early achievements.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are the proud parents of a baby boy, PEOPLE confirms.
"In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009, Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. He weighs 7 lbs. 14 oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing
well. Thank you for all of your good wishes," the couple wrote on Richie's Web site.
The newborn joins older sister Harlow Winter Kate Madden, born in January 2008.
"We're very, very blessed," Madden, 30, told PEOPLE on Aug. 6 of the approaching event. "We've already had one healthy kid, and that's all you can ask for as a parent – healthy kids."

With Nicole Richie due with their second child in the coming weeks, attentive papa Joel Madden has managed to dodge a bullet when it comes to extreme pregnancy cravings.
In lieu of the traditional pickles and ice-cream combos demanded by some women, Madden tells PEOPLE's Celebrity Baby Blog that the expectant mama has kept her list short.
Unfortunately, the simple requests come at a high price: While her cravings may be limited to hamburgers from Southern California's In-N-Out chain, the sudden hunger pangs can occur any time – day or night.

Singer, producer, father and now author?
Good Charlotte frontman and Nicole Richie beau Joel Madden has been mum about his literary aspirations in the past, but confirmed to PEOPLE Saturday that he is indeed working on a book.
"I'm lightly working on one," Madden, 30, said, before taking the field in
the Hollywood Stars Celebrity Softball game at Dodger Stadium, "but I don't want to put a book out there if it's not actually meaningful. I'm not going to go there unless I can deliver."
Though the project is in it's early stages, the soon-to-be father of two already knows to follow the age-old advice given by all writing teachers – write what you know.

Joel Madden: Nicole's Second Pregnancy Easier, Less Intense

For Joel Madden and Nicole Richie, being uninformed is bliss when it comes
to the impending birth of their second child.
"We don't know what the sex is," he told PEOPLE Friday before deejaying at Prive Las Vegas. "We waited on the first one and it was such an awesome experience that we can't wait to see what the next one is. It's exciting to wait it out."
While the couple are happily awaiting baby No. 2, the stress level is definitely lower than it was when their first child, Harlow, was born.
