OPPOSED: John Kennedy Jr. was said to be "upset" when Hillary Rodham Clinton announced she was running for the office of Democratic U.S. Senator from New York, a job that he wanted, according to author Laurence Leamer's new book, "Sons of Camelot." But the New York Post quotes Leamer as saying that Kennedy (who was killed in a 1999 plane crash) put his political ambitions on hold for Clinton because he was a gentleman.

Finding the fatal wreckage of John F. Kennedy Jr.'s private plane off the coast of Martha's Vineyard has cost taxpayers more than $500,000, according to government and private estimates. President Clinton himself has taken responsibility for authorizing the extraordinary effort to recover the private plane. He based it on the Kennedy family's role "in our national lives and because of the enormous losses that they have sustained in our lifetimes." Some of the costs:

Kennedy Crash Aftermath

The mother of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Lauren Bessette left open the option Thursday to sue over the plane crash that killed her daughters and John F. Kennedy Jr. Ann M. Freeman of Old Greenwich, Conn., filed a petition in State Surrogate's Court in Manhattan to distribute existing assets totaling less than $1 million and any money that might be produced from lawsuits. The court papers said there may be "personal injury and wrongful death claims against persons and parties as yet unknown" arising from the July 16, 1999, crash.
