John Legend and hip-hop band the Roots have teamed up to record Wake Up!, a funky, old school-inspired album featuring covers of classic songs from Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and more.
"It says it all in the title," John Legend says. "It's saying we can't depend on the older generation to fix everything for us; we gotta educate ourselves, empower ourselves and use the power that we have to make the world better."
The collaboration between Legend and the Roots, who are known for their jazzy, eclectic use of live instruments, and also also serve as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, first began as an idea during the 2008 election.

John Legend was surprised to hear about the allegations of assault against Chris Brown – but says the singer will have to accept the consequences of his actions if the reports are true that he hit his girlfriend, Rihanna.
"I know both of them. I was surprised when I heard because it doesn't strike me as something Chris would do," Legend told PEOPLE Thursday at Las Vegas's LAX during the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue release party.
"You never know what's inside people or what can trigger that," he added.

His stage name may be bold, but it's all part of John Legend's plan. "I want to measure myself against the greatest," the 26-year-old singer born John Stephens explains. "I felt like my name was just another part of my aspiration to do this as well as possible." So far, so good. Since releasing his major-label debut Get Lifted late last year, Legend has scored platinum sales thanks to the hits "Used to Love U" and "Ordinary People." He also gave a rousing Grammy performance and has an upcoming TV concert (airing Sunday, 7 p.m., on the Oxygen Network).
