John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston Call It Quits – Again

They wowed Hollywood with a high-profile Oscar date, posing arm-in-arm for photographs in what was largely seen as their official coming out as a couple after a year of off-and-on dating. Then Jennifer Aniston headed to Europe to promote Marley & Me and John Mayer stayed in L.A. to work on his music.

And just days after Aniston returned, they were a couple no more, sources confirm to PEOPLE.

"They had some disagreements and decided to not continue to see each other," says one source. "Jen is moving on with her life like she always does. She seems happy."

A second source says Mayer broke up with Aniston after she returned from Europe.

Justin Spoofs John Mayer on Late Night Premiere

If imitation isn't the most sincere form of flattery, John Mayer better watch his back.

The singer was the subject of a killer (albeit slightly mocking) impersonation by his pal Justin Timberlake on Monday's premiere of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

"John Mayer is like if Macy Gray and Smokey Robinson," Timberlake started, before switching gears, "Actually, Macy Gray and Smokey the Bear, had a love child."

Riffing on Mayer's hit "Daughters," Timberlake – who most recently scored big laughs with his SNL spoof of Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" video – then explained the technique behind impersonating Mayer's "solo face" saying, "Literally his tongue takes over."

It's been a year for Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer, who went from broken up in August to Oscar It Couple in just six short months.

The two clearly have taken their relationship to a new level. Of their big red-carpet night, Mayer told Ryan Seacrest, "You have to really be with someone that you know who has your back in that situation. And she did, and it was really great."

But will it last? With Aniston in Europe promoting Marley & Me, Mayer was far away and focused on work at home in California. When they got back together last October, 59 percent of PEOPLE.com readers didn't approve of their reunion. What do you think of their staying power now?

When Jennifer Aniston first met John Mayer at an Oscar party in 2008, she insisted she "barely knew his music." One year later, the two were the reigning "It" couple at this year's ceremony following a surprise appearance by Aniston as a presenter with Mayer as her date.

The very public outing, complete with handholding and kissing, capped off a whirlwind year for the off- and on-again couple.

"At some point, you feel comfortable and say, 'This is the choice I want to make,'" Mayer told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM morning radio show Wednesday.

Here's a look at back the couple's highs and lows:

John Mayer may have had Jennifer Aniston as his Oscar date – but that didn't make the night less nerve-wracking.

"You can go from a Grammy winner to a water boy when you walk into the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night," Mayer said during an interview on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show Wednesday morning. "That's just, like, a whole different level."

Once he got over his nerves, the singer admits, "it was really, really fun."

From color-coordinated outfits to matching Oscar nominations, star couples shined at Sunday's Oscars.

Zac Efron and HSM sweetheart Vanessa Hudgens were two of the first stars to hit the red carpet, and an elegant Hudgens, dressed in a floor-length Marchesa gown, gushed, "I feel like a young Audrey Hepburn." Efron pulled double-duty at the awards, presenting and performing in a musical number with Hudgens, host Hugh Jackman and Béyonce.

Jennifer Aniston, a surprise presenter, skipped the red carpet, but wowed viewers in a shimmering Valentino Haute Couture gown while announcing the animation awards with Jack Black. The Marley & Me star cozied up to beau John Mayer during the ceremony, about a dozen rows behind Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Best Supporting Actor nominee Josh Brolin and wife Diane Lane kept their Oscar outfits classic in coordinating black. The Milk star and Lane, dressed in Dolce & Gabbana, later snuggled and stole kisses at the Vanity Fair bash.

Super-couple Pitt and Jolie, both nominated for leading roles in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Changeling respectively, stunned on the red carpet, and joked with PEOPLE about it being date night. Pitt looked dapper in a Tom Ford tuxedo, while Jolie dazzled in an Elie Saab couture gown and 180 carats of emeralds.

While Slumdog Millionaire piled up the Oscars Sunday night, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston defied expectations and piled on the smiles – as their dual appearance at Hollywood's night of nights was as smooth as the silk gowns that filled the Kodak Theatre.

Jolie, of course, attended with her partner and fellow nominee, Brad Pitt, while his ex-wife, Aniston, was accompanied by her boyfriend, John Mayer.

Pitt and Jolie told PEOPLE that their six kids were home "throwing spaghetti against the wall," while the two of them were enjoying a date night.

With the Oscars just days away, John Mayer is gearing up for the big event – and apparently date night.

"It's my first Oscars," Mayer, 31, told Popsugar.com. "And it's my first being an Oscar boyfriend."

Mayer's girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston, has not officially confirmed her attendance.

The outing would follow two weeks of celebrating: On Feb. 12, they jetted to the Bahamian island of Eleuthera for Valentine's weekend; earlier in the week, they marked Aniston's 40th birthday with a festive party, an intimate dinner for two, and a quiet gathering at her Beverly Hills home.
