Not only is NBC planning a new host for The Tonight Show, but a new home, too – though neither will be particularly unfamiliar to viewers of late night.
Despite his present high ratings, when the show's long-running host Jay Leno's contract expires in the fall of 2014, he will be succeeded by current Late Night host Jimmy Fallon, 38, reports Thursday's The New York Times.
Furthermore, according to the paper, once the shift takes place, the program will move back to New York – the original home to the show, starting in 1954, with Steve Allen, and then, Jack Paar, as host, until 1972, when Johnny Carson (who took over in 1962) moved the show west, where it has remained ever since.

CLARIFIED: Late-night legend Johnny Carson's last hours were spent in a hospital, not at his home as previously reported, according to the Associated Press, which cites his death certificate. Carson, who died Jan. 23 at age 79, was at Los Angeles's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, not his Malibu home. The Tonight Show host was cremated and his ashes turned over to his wife, Alexis.

FAREWELL, JOHNNY: As fans of the late Johnny Carson placed flowers on his Hollywood Boulevard star and at a makeshift memorial in Times Square Monday, his onetime home base, NBC's Tonight Show, paid tribute in beautiful downtown Burbank. "As a performer, I never wanted to impress anyone more than Johnny Carson," said Jay Leno, who took over for Carson in 1992. "Johnny had that special quality of grace, charm and dignity in the public arena. He was an incredibly polite man and when you were invited into his house, this show, you knew you were an honored guest." Carson, 79, died Sunday after battling emphysema.

FINAL CALL: "Ally McBeal" is planning to go out with a bang. The Los Angeles Times reported that the David E. Kelley program starring Calista Flockhart, 37, as the romantically challenged legal eagle, will bring back three departed members of the original cast for its May 20 finale -- including one whose character is deceased. (One name that didn't crop up on the returns list is Robert Downey Jr., 37, whose romantic role was essentially written out after his recent problems involving drugs.) As for those who will reappear: the return of Gil Bellows, 34, as Ally's former lover and colleague, Billy, will hardly come as a shock to fans of the series, notes the paper, given that he has made several appearances as a ghost since Billy died two years ago. Also returning for the finale, to be titled -- aptly -- "Bygones," will be Courtney Thorne-Smith, 34, who played Billy's wife, Georgia, and Lisa Nicole Carson, 32, who played Ally's roommate, Renee.
