Johnny Depp is a cat in the hat one 12-year-old will never forget.

Playing 1930's bank robber John Dillinger – American's Most Wanted at the time – for his upcoming movie Public Enemies, Depp was shooting on location in Wisconsin in April when he was observed on the set by local boy Jack Taylor, who especially admired Depp/Dillinger's hat.

In fact, the boy wanted the fedora, and asked the actor if he could have it. Depp, 45, said Taylor could, once the movie was finished.

Last week, reports the Oshkosh, Wis., newspaper the Northwestern, Depp made good on his promise. Taylor received the hat.

• By day he's shooting Public Enemies (where he's playing gangster John Dillinger), but at night Johnny Depp has been checking out Chicago's legendary jazz club, the Green Mill. On a recent visit, the actor relaxed over a beer while listening to the local house band, Deep Blue Organ Trio. Between sets, Depp chatted with the group's organist, Chris Foreman, and seemed to blend right into the crowd. The next day, Depp enjoyed a piled-high Reuben sandwich at the Windy City's Kerryman Bar & Grill before hitting up Madison & Friends, a high-end children's boutique in Chicago's Gold Coast.

It is taking three top names Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell – to step into Heath Ledger's final role, in the unfinished movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, according to a rep for Law.

Speaking to the BBC, Law's spokeswoman confirmed that the three actors would play Ledger's role of Tony. She was unaware, however, as to how the part would be restructured in the film, which deals with magic.

Ledger, 28, was still shooting the $30-million movie, directed by Terry Gilliam and costarring Christopher Plummer, when he was found dead from an accidental overdose of prescription medicines on Jan. 22.

They may not have been on hand to take home their Golden Globes on Sunday night, but Hollywood's top actors – including Johnny Depp and Daniel Day-Lewis – expressed gratitude for the honor Monday.

Said Entourage winner Jeremy Piven: "I was on the set working last night and I heard my name called and then I heard a lot of yelling from the trailers. The cast broke out some champagne. I feel really lucky – except for the fact that I didn't get to be on the same stage as Steven Spielberg."

They may not have been on hand to take home their Golden Globes on Sunday night, but Hollywood's best actors expressed gratitude for the honor Monday.

"I was on the set working last night and I heard my name called and then I heard a lot of yelling from the trailers. The cast broke out some champagne," Entourage star Jeremy Piven said. "I feel really lucky – except for the fact that I didn't get to be on the same stage as Steven Spielberg."

Piven, who won best supporting actor in a series, miniseries or TV movie, says he's one of the lucky ones. Not only did he get the Globe, but he's got work in the middle of the strike. The set he was on was for a new Will Farrell comedy, The Goods.

On a plane from L.A. to Ireland when the announcements were made, Daniel Day-Lewis, best actor in a drama for There Will Be Blood, kept his statement short and sweet: "I'm delighted."

Johnny Depp – best actor in a comedy or musical for his turn as the murderous barber in Sweeney Todd – thanked everyone from his costar to his family. He released the following statement: BR] "I would like to thank my beloved friends at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for bestowing such an honor on me. It is a humbling experience, especially in the company of such talent. For many years the HFPA has supported my work and for that I have always been truly grateful. While this is indeed a happy day for me, I am overjoyed at the recognition the film as a whole is receiving. Tim [Burton] is a dear friend and a true artist whose vision and skill inspire us all. He is a genius. Without his unwavering trust and support, I would not be anywhere near where I am today. Also, big thanks and respect to Helena [Bonham-Carter], whose simply staggering performance as Mrs. Lovett is a wonder to behold. I must send a behemoth salute to the wonderful crew and cast of Sweeney Todd and all at Dreamworks/Paramount and Warner Bros. Pictures. In addition, I'd also like to extend my sincere gratitude to, first and foremost, my cherished friend and agent of forever ago, Tracey Jacobs; the extraordinary man and producer, Richard Zanuck; the mastermind Stephen Sondheim; and, of course, my precious family, Vanessa, Lily-Rose and Jack, for all of their love, support and pure and absolute happiness everyday. Overall, I believe it to be a proud achievement for everyone involved and on behalf of us all, I thank you."

Although the writers' strike continues to slow down the award season, on Tuesday night the people were heard – and not just in New Hampshire.

Yes, the 34th annual People's Choice Awards carried on. Rather than cancel the show, producers retooled it as an understated, "newsmagazine"-style broadcast, hosted by Queen Latifah on CBS. The actress acknowledged the changes immediately, telling viewers, "I know this show's a little different than last time. But we have what's important – you, the people, and all your favorites all night long."

Johnny Depp, who had no formal singing training before taking the starring role in the musical Sweeney Todd, says there are only two men he'd sing for.

"I don't think I would have attempted this with anyone else" but director and pal Tim Burton, he told The Envelope.

"What if Barry Manilow asked you?" Burton then asked his leading man.

"That's a different thing," Depp quipped, "cause that might mean duet, and if that's the case, I'm in."
