The Good Wife is now a de facto widow. It's hard to imagine a lonelier, sadder lot than hers.
That's what we experience and learn on Sunday's episode (9 p.m. ET/PT) of the CBS legal drama, an established classic that a week ago, after five seasons, suddenly became the sort of show that sends shock waves up and down the Twitter ladder. Lawyer Will Gardner (Josh Charles) was killed in a courtroom shoot-out in one of the most jolting twists ever – a jaw-dropper in an age when shocking twists are becoming routine as meals.

Get those hankies handy.
The promo for Sunday's episode of The Good Wife looks to be a long tearful goodbye to Will Gardner.
Julianna Margulies's Alicia gets the shocking news in a phone call that Josh Charles's character is dead, followed by gut-wrenching scenes, including Alicia saying, "I loved him."
Margulies, meanwhile, is commiserating with frazzled fans still reeling from the loss of Gardner.
The Emmy-winning actress confirmed she's known for a year about the actor's dramatic departure on Sunday night's shocking episode – and she's as sad about his exit as any loyal viewer.
"Every single day I will miss him," she wrote in a Facebook chat Monday. "He is my friend and I love working with him."

Killing off a main character in a television show is a risky move: You're upending the show's world (and putting a coworker out of a job) in the hope that the shake-up will lead to something greater down the line. And guess what? Despite the ministrations of fans, who claim that they will never watch their favorite show without [insert character name here], it often works!
Below, 13 shows that did the same thing The Good Wife did Sunday night, and not only survived, but thrived.

The Good Wife now has its own "Red Wedding."
Sunday's episode ended with a violent twist that can be described as either a classic OMG moment or a classic game changer, although to anyone who has followed CBS's great legal drama through its five seasons this was also a heartbreaker.
The wallop can best be appreciated by saying that investigator Kalinda Sharma let her mask of absolute control slip and completely fall: In a hospital emergency room, she began to sob.
WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD …
