Originally posted 09/11/2008 08:45AM

Longtime friends Julia Roberts and Dave Matthews joined forces Wednesday night at the sold-out Stand Up For a Cure concert at Madison Square Garden to benefit lung cancer research.

The singer – who said he was just 10 years old when his father died of lung cancer – movingly told the audience, "One day, we hopefully won't need to have events like this."

Roberts started the night off by introducing her good pal and his band to the raucous New York fans: "I cannot tell you how excited I am to be in the greatest city in the world to introduce one of the greatest bands of the world!"

Tuesday evening was a night on the town for Julia Roberts – that town being Venice, Calif., near her home.

The star, 40 and fabulous-looking, caught up with some girlfriends for a dinner at Hal's Bar & Grill, in the trendy canal section of the beach city.

Roberts was all smiles as she arrived – relatively unnoticed – and settled into a front corner table that ended up accommodating five other women.

Julia Roberts and her pal Dave Matthews are teaming up again.

Roberts – who joked to PEOPLE in 2005 that she is the Dave Matthews Band's "mascot" – will introduce the group when it performs at the Stand Up for a Cure 2008 Concert Series at New York City's Madison Square Garden on Sept. 10.

"The charity is honored that she will be introducing the band at the concert," says a rep for the event. "Her support will make a huge difference."

The concert will raise money and awareness for lung cancer research.

The last time Roberts worked with Matthews was in 2005, when she appeared in his "Dreamgirl" video. It was her first acting gig after she gave birth to twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, who are now 3 ½. She and her husband Danny Moder had a third child, Henry Daniel, in June 2007.

Kit Kittredge Fans Get Doll-ed Up for Abigail Breslin

Originally posted 06/20/2008 11:45AM

Julia Roberts may be a global superstar, but Thursday night Abigail Breslin was the focus of screaming fans – hordes of little girls, that is – at the premiere of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl.

Roberts, as one of the film's executive producers, made an appearance on the red carpet at Manhattan's Ziegfield Theatre, along with Julianne Moore and her kids, and Jada Pinkett Smith and daughter Willow, who appears in the movie. But it was 12-year-old Breslin, the lead in the film inspired by the American Girl doll phenomenon, who drew the star worship, with packs of girls – many of them carrying their American Girl dolls – swarming, screaming and trying to track her with their cell phones.

Breslin told PEOPLE she also relates to the Girl craze. "I grew up with all the dolls," she said. "I collected all the dolls since I was eight or so. I've just always liked the dolls, and Kit was always my favorite."

They had chemistry onscreen in 2004's Closer – and now Julia Roberts and Clive Owen are teaming up again in Duplicity, a spy flick shooting in New York.

"She was fantastic," Owen told U.K's The Guardian back then about his costar. "You work with probably the biggest film star in the world and you're not quite sure what you're going to get. And we got on very well." And while the two have been busy over the years – Owen has been Derailed with Jennifer Aniston and to Sin City with Jessica Alba while Roberts has become a mom to three children with husband Danny Moder – the two look as sexy together now as they did then.

Julia Roberts says her Golden Globe nomination was a "thrilling" moment in her normally blissful, domestic life.

"Usually the triumph of my day is everybody making it to the potty," she cracks in an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show scheduled to air Friday. "So yes, I think it's thrilling."

Asked if Roberts, who received a best supporting actress nod for Charlie Wilson's War, feels "ho-hum" about yet another nomination to add to her roster of three past Globe wins and an Oscar, she says, "I didn't realize I had done that much. That's great. No, it's exciting."

Tom, Julia & Their Spouses: After the Premiere

Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts's new movie Charlie Wilson's War was shown in at least 14 theaters at the Universal City Walk Cineplex Monday night. And after the screenings let out, Hanks was spotted, still holding wife Rita Wilson's hand, politely introducing his mother to a group of friends with the security detail forming a loose ring around the group.

Roberts, in a snug, knee-length, black Dolce & Gabbana cocktail gown, was spotted with hubby Danny Moder as they made their way through the crowded lobby. Moder had his hands on Julia's hips as they walked, forming what one onlooker dubbed "a lovey-dovey Conga line for two."

George Clooney and Brad Pitt have teamed up on yet another project. Viewers of Wednesday night's 22nd Annual American Cinematheque Awards on AMC, honoring Julia Roberts, were inside on a men's room meeting between the duo.

The notorious pranksters couldn't make it to the show itself, which taped on Oct. 11, so they sent along this brief but hilarious clip to offer their congratulations to frequent costar Roberts. Always up for combining their involvement in political issues with entertainment, they decided to do a take-off on Sen. Larry Craig's recent debacle in an airport restroom. Perhaps these two will garner an honor for their work here themselves.

Julia Roberts, a mother of three, has made it clear – in her actions and now in words – that she doesn't like paparazzi staking out schools in order to get photos.

Roberts, 40, recently chased down a photographer in her SUV near a school and gave him an earful, in an incident that was caught on video and shown on TMZ. Asked by Access Hollwood for Friday's show what she said to the man, Roberts replied, "I just told him a school is not a place for a grown man to be crawling around trying to take pictures."
