Dancing with the Stars: Technical Problems Skew Results

It was a night of exciting performances, positive reviews from the judges and a pair of big twists for the eight remaining couples on Dancing with the Stars Monday night.

First, the pairs had to perform in an improvisational switch-up challenge, which required them to show off their ability to transition seamlessly while dancing to music that suddenly changed.

Then, at elimination time, there was an even bigger twist that one no one – not even producers – had seen coming.

It was so great to be a part of Corbin's dedication to his sister last week. The reaction was so touching. I know it meant a lot to her.

I'm so stoked for tonight's dance. We're doing a Viennese waltz to the theme song from a hit HBO show. The whole package is pretty much one of the top two characters of that show and their love story. It's an incredible dance. The characters start out hating each other and then they fall in love.

It's pretty incredible how in sync Corbin and I are. We finish each other's sentences. Even our stomachs growl in sync. I have an amazing connection with him.

My sister is usually very internal with her emotions, so getting to see her reaction and to be able to hear how much last week's dance meant to her made the whole experience absolutely worth it. I know the dance made an impact. It made me so happy.

It was so great that Karina took my family's emotion and story and was able to put it into a dance. It's really incredible to be able to trust her with that.

This week we've got the Viennese waltz. We're doing it to something very epic and I'm just super stoked about it. We're going to be in costume and we're telling the story of characters from a popular TV show. It's my favorite show.

Karina Smirnoff: I'm a Little Nervous for This Week's Dance

This Monday is a special week on the show. It's called "The Most Memorable Year." Every celebrity will choose a year in their life that they will talk about and explain why it's an important year. So we're mainly dedicating our dance to Corbin's sisters, but also to someone who's going through something in their lives. Our message we want to send for this week is: don't lose hope, believe in your dreams and if you follow your heart they will come true.

I'm excited, but I'm a little nervous because it's a bit intimidating. It's a necessity for me to choreograph a dance that will have the feeling of inspiration and wanting to pursue your dreams, but when you dedicate it to family it puts extra pressure on the dancers so I'm a little nervous about this one.

I have a very close, tight-knit family, and 2011 was a big year of change for us. So the theme for my dance this week is "The Memorable Year" – and it will be a dance that evokes a lot about my family.

In 2011, I ended up moving out, my sister went off to school, and then my other sister was diagnosed with scoliosis. It was just a big year of transition for all of us, and because there were so many obstacles getting in the way, it kind of brought us closer. So I'm dedicating my dance this week to my three sisters: Hunter, Phoenix and Jag. It's going to be really sweet, and it's to a beautiful song. This dance is extremely close to me, and it's very different from what we did last week.

Corbin and I are really, really excited about this week's dance, the paso doble. It's one of my favorites because it's passionate and spicy, full of male-female interaction.

Our song is amazing, but the dance is kind of impossible to count. It's really challenging because we have to dance to the melody of the music.

I was surprised Bill Nye went home last week because he was a fan favorite. To me what's scary is that it was because of an injury. We're all having these injuries so early on in the game because the caliber of the talent is so high, so everyone is pushing themselves more than they usually would. It's been really intense.

I'm still learning all of the technique of the ballroom style. Last week was my first ballroom dance, and not only was it my first ballroom, but it was also the fastest quickstep that's ever been done on the show. Our quickstep was elegant and very old school, and this week is just going to be raw passion.

I'm used to the attention now from the show, but the only difference is I'm older and I have more responsibilities. Nowadays, I do my own laundry, my own grocery shopping, drive myself. With everything added on top, I still want to be able to talk to my family, my girlfriend, and know how to juggle everything but still have a blast.

My girlfriend has been in the audience for both shows. She is definitely someone I consult with about a lot. She is not even close to being jealous. She has nothing to worry about.

Our quickstep for this week is very difficult. Our routine is fast and complicated. I want to use this routine as a statement to tell people we're here to compete.

This dance is like P90X for us. Literally, at the end of every rehearsal, we'll go outside and just sit in this one area for 45 minutes not moving. The body is done. Even my eyelashes hurt. But I think the dance is going to be so cool.

I feel great right now. I think we're in a great place. I thought our contemporary routine was pretty cool and I thought we nailed what Corbin [Bleu] and I wanted to do. It showed potential and it showed that there's room to grow. We wanted to take some risks with lifts and I think overall, it paid off. We were in the second position with Val [Chmerkovskiy] and Elizabeth [Berkley]. I think that's a great place to start.

I think, though, if we were able to do this dance later on in the season, we would have been able to a better job with it, because we would have been more used to each other and each other's timing and body weight. It's hard to gauge scoring. I wonder if they're judging us against other couples or against contemporary dances done in previous seasons? You can't control what the judges do, but you can control what you put out there.
