First, it was Gene Simmons's reality TV proposal – which aired months later, when the couple had all but split up.
Now, just days after PEOPLE broke the news that Jesse James and Kat Von D ended their engagement, the former bride-to-be can be seen gushing about her then-fiancé on the new season of LA Ink, which premiered Thursday night.
"The long-distance relationship, we're just making it work," says the L.A.-based Von D. (James, who lives in Austin, blamed their breakup on the miles between them.) She also refers to him on the show as "my soulmate" and giddily shows off her new tattoo – an image of James as a child.

The day didn't go as planned for Kat Von D.
What would have been her first public appearance following her split from Jesse James turned into a dramatic exit when she walked out of the Good Day L.A. studio Wednesday before her interview even began. Then it turned into a Twitter war with one of the show hosts. Finally, she says, it turned into a moment of clarity.
"What can I say?" the title of her Wednesday night blog post reads. "I suck. I allowed today to get the best of me."

Kat Von D and Jillian Reynolds are in a war of words on Twitter, following a morning show appearance gone wrong.
Reynolds, 44, and her Good Day L.A. co-host Jeff Michael were scheduled to have Von D, 29, on the program Wednesday to promote the new season of her TLC show L.A. Ink.

Jesse James Awarded Sole Custody of Daughter

Not all has been bad this week for Jesse James, who confirmed his split with Kat Von D on Monday.
The motorcycle mogul, 42, was awarded sole custody of his daughter Sunny, 7, in an Orange County, Calif., courthouse on Monday, following a several-years-long acrimonious court battle with Sunny's mother Janine Lindemulder.
James's attorney John Schilling tells PEOPLE that if Lindemulder chooses to relocate to Texas to be near Sunny, she'll be ordered to inpatient rehab. If she remains in California, she'll only get monitored visitation of her daughter.

Jesse James and Kat Von D have called off their engagement and broken up.
"I'm so sad because I really love her," James tells PEOPLE exclusively. "The distance between us was just too much."
James, 42, and the LA Ink star, 29, were engaged in January and had been planning a summer wedding around the one-year anniversary of when they started dating.

Their romance played out online and in magazines – and now Jesse James and Kat Von D's relationship will be televised.
On season 5 of LA Ink, which premieres July 28 (10 p.m. ET), viewers will see the tattoo artist, 29, become engaged to her soul mate, James, 42.
"[It's] a long distance relationship, but we're just making it work," Von D says in an upcoming episode.

"That is absolutely not true," says James, 42, bristling at Internet reports that he's split from the LA Ink star. "We're still going strong. Things are completely good with us."
Adds Von D: "That's the furthest thing from the truth."

Jesse James has no doubt that fiancée Kat Von D is his soul mate.
"We have something special that I've never felt with anyone I've ever been with," James, 42, tells PEOPLE of the L.A. Ink star, whom he got engaged to in January. "She loves me like no woman ever has, 100 percent. Man, she has my back."
In fact, when James was at his lowest point last year after news of an affair imploded his marriage to Sandra Bullock and upended his life, it was Von D, 29, who stood by his side.
"We fell in love at the worst possible time. I'm being chased around [by paparazzi] like a dog and here comes this angel," he says. "Not only does she love me, but she loves me so much that she was willing to subject herself to everything that I was going through and [endure] all the ridicule that she got for being with me."
