You wouldn't think it would be too much of a stretch for one gorgeous actress to play another, but one challenge that Kate Beckinsale faced portraying screen goddess Ava Gardner in The Aviator (opening Dec. 17) is the change in body image from Gardner's era to now. "I think that the female body is definitely served up in a different way in the '40s," Beckinsale said recently. "It's a different kind of sexuality. There's not as much of their skin on show, that's for sure." Luckily, she had some help getting into it. "One of the things that was so great was that the costume designer was so attentive to the detail, down to the pantyhose and the underwear and the girdle and the pointy bra and every single thing that could possibly be authentic," said Beckinsale. Still, for the preternaturally slim star, Gardner's curves felt alien. "I had to gain some weight for this as well," she said. "In the costumes I felt sort of great. On the weekends I felt like a fat Kate."

It was quite a celebration for Van Helsing actress Kate Beckinsale, whose vampire-hunting movie with Hugh Jackman was the weekend's No. 1 movie: The British brunette beauty married her boyfriend, Underworld director Len Wiseman, on Sunday in a small ceremony at the posh Bel-Air Hotel.

RULED: Bobby Brown, 34, was ordered to stand trial Wednesday on charges that he hit his wife, Whitney Houston, last December. Brown and Houston exchanged smiles during a 5-minute court hearing in Atlanta, the Associated Press reports. Judge Barry Zimmerman also ordered Brown to turn himself in to authorities July 10 or 11 for fingerprinting. The judge also warned him against having "violent contact" with Houston. The couple left the courtroom walking arm-in-arm and made no comment to reporters.

DEFENDED: Jury selection begins in Manhattan Monday for a $3 million lawsuit against Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, 34, filed by his former chauffeur, Wardel Fenderson, 45, according to published reports. Fenderson contends he was forced by the music mogul and his bodyguards to speed away from a Times Square nightclub on Dec. 27, 1999, ignoring police orders to stop after a shooting took place. Combs, who was cleared of weapons charges in the case, is expected to take the stand in the suit, and his companion at the time, Jennifer Lopez, reportedly has been subpoenaed.
