Killing off a main character in a television show is a risky move: You're upending the show's world (and putting a coworker out of a job) in the hope that the shake-up will lead to something greater down the line. And guess what? Despite the ministrations of fans, who claim that they will never watch their favorite show without [insert character name here], it often works!

When the highly anticipated second season of House of Cards drops Friday, actress Kate Mara will be a typical viewer ready to binge-watch.
Though she gained early access to the show's first season, Mara, 30, hasn't seen any of the political drama's new episodes, which Netflix will release all at once on Valentine's Day.
"I'm just as excited to watch it like anyone else," she tells GQ in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands Feb. 25.
