Today Show Helps Son Honor His Parents
Originally posted 09/29/2008 11:15AM
The Today show helped make a dream come true Monday morning, when Lance Carr of Colorado got a phone call from the program's fourth-hour hosts, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.
Carr, who, since the age of 10 months has had a rare form of muscular dystrophy, is the first winner in the show's "Everyone Has a Story" contest in which entrants sent essays telling their story, explaining what makes it special. The prize? A chance to have his story to told on the air – and have a brand new song, inspired by the tale, written and performed by a Broadway star.
As Gifford said of 38-year-old Carr – who wrote in to say that his father Larry is his hero – his disease renders him unable to move any part of his body except for his thumbs, making him completely dependent upon his parents.

Kathie Lee Defended After an On-Air Swipe
Originally posted 08/11/2008 09:55AM
In light of some new criticism about Kathie Lee Gifford – stemming from a Today show regular telling her on-air last month to stop being such a Chatty Kathie – NBC is speaking up on behalf of its still-relatively new addition to the fourth hour of its top-rated morning program.
"The feeling here is we love Kathie Lee," Today executive producer Jim Bell tells the The New York Times. "She is unique, she's a character, she's colorful and she's not afraid to speak her mind. I don't think we’d have her any other way."
Since joining co-host Hoda Kotb in April, Gifford, 54, was targeted by some TV critics for falling into her same old pattern of monopolizing airtime to talk about herself and her family. (A PEOPLE.com poll in April, asking for reaction to Gifford's return to daytime TV, found that 42 percent of the respondents "loved it," while 58 percent "loathed it.")

Kathie Lee Gifford came out for her second day as fourth-hour co-host of the Today show Tuesday, and said, "Everyone's reaction around the country was so nice ... Thank you, America."
Indeed, for the most part, the return of Gifford to daytime TV on Monday was largely met with open arms – though, as has long been the case with the personality, there were detractors. Strong ones.

CAST: Kate Bosworth has apparently won the role of Lois Lane in Bryan Singer's new Superman movie over such other contenders as Claire Danes, Linda Cardellini and Michelle Monaghan, says the Hollywood Reporter. Bosworth will costar opposite Brandon Routh, who was already named the new Man of Steel. The villain of the piece, Lex Luthor, is to be Kevin Spacey, who currently stars with Bosworth in his film bio of '60s singer Bobby Darin, Beyond the Sea. Long in the works, the Superman movie is finally set to start flying before the cameras in March. … That same month, in Florida, John Travolta and James Gandolfini will start filming Lonely Hearts, based on the true story of detectives who captured a couple known as the "Lonely Hearts Killers," who found their victims through newspaper personal ads, Variety reports.
