Within hours of Anderson Cooper coming out, stars and media figures offered their support and congratulations to the CNN anchor and daytime talk show host.
"I'm proud of you, @AndersonCooper," Ellen DeGeneres, who came out years ago, wrote on Twitter.
Neil Patrick Harris also gave the newsman his good wishes, writing, "Good for you, @AndersonCooper. You're awesome."
Both messages have been re-tweeted almost 5,000 times.
And though he's away, Cooper, 45, is getting the message loud and clear. "I appreciate all the nice tweets," he wrote on Twitter Tuesday. "I am in Botswana working but want to wish everyone a great 4th of July!"

On Thursday night all you had to do was follow Kirstie Alley on Twitter – or have a reservation at Mr. Chow.
The actor – who turns 50 on Friday – had a early celebration and dinner at the Beverly Hills hotspot with girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis … and a ton of other celebrities.

Congratulations, ladies: There's still a chance to date the Old Spice guy.
"I am single," Isaiah Mustafa tells PEOPLE. "I like hanging out with people."
As a result of being so outgoing, Mustafa, 37, said Monday at Cosmopolitan's Fun Fearless Male of 2011 party in New York (where he was honored along with Russell Brand and Penn Badgley), "Anytime I have been hanging out with people in any capacity, it's always taken as something more."
There are also the rumors – and even more than just rumors. Comedian Kathy Griffin, for instance, spilled to Howard Stern on Monday that she and Mustafa are an item.

Kathy Griffin is off the D-list.
The comedian is ending the six season – and Emmy Award-winning – run of her hit Bravo show, My Life on the D-List, she tells PEOPLE.
"It was a really tough decision because I think of the D-List as pretty much my baby for the last six seasons and I also think it was really time to stop doing it," Griffin, 50, says by phone from L.A. "Reality is great, but I really didn't set out to be a reality star. So now it's time to spread my wings and show that I'm a little different than Kate Gosselin."
"I'm not saying better," she says, laughing, "but maybe separate myself from the pack a little bit."

Kathy Griffin, who just turned 50, stood up fearlessly in front of troops at a San Diego marine base wearing only a camouflage bikini and an ammo belt.
And, boy, did she work for that bod.
Griffin, who was entertaining the troops as host of Sunday's VH1 Divas Salute The Troops at the Miramar Marine base in San Diego, tells PEOPLE her killer abs didn't come easy.

Move over, Jimmy Kimmel. Kathy Griffin is gunning to be Levi Johnston's campaign manager as he runs for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and she even has a strategy all dreamed up.
"The campaign would be based on me being the first lady," the comedian, who once feigned a relationship with Johnston for laughs, tells PEOPLE. "But it would also be based on a celebration of Levi trolling the town shirtless – or being photographed in the shower in various stages of undress."

Actress Shannen Doherty and Cobra Starship singer Gabe Saporta had 26 drinks each Sunday night – and, no, this isn't a preface to an episode of Celebrity Rehab.
Doherty and Saporta weren't exactly enjoying a night on the town. They were judging a regional competition as part of GQ magazine and Bombay Sapphire's search for the nation's "most inspired" bartender.

With a borrowed hairstyle and bikini-ready body, comedienne Kathy Griffin was a dead ringer for the famous mom of multiples at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood while taping an upcoming skit for Jimmy Kimmel Live.
"She was walking around the hotel and people actually thought she was Kate," says an observer.
Who played Jon in the skit (set to air next week)? Original Star Trek fleet member George Takei.
