While the news is still playing out on the future of NBC's Tonight Show, with Jimmy Fallon set to succeed Jay Leno, now comes the revelation that the network's half-a-billion-dollar-a-year morning franchise, the Today show, nearly lost its No. 1 star: Matt Lauer.
Though currently the show is going through a turbulent period in the aftermath of Ann Curry's departure and its ratings slip to ABC rival Good Morning America, Lauer, 55, was set to jump ship to ABC last year, when reports surfaced that Ryan Seacrest was possibly going to replace him on Today, reports New York magazine, in the issue hitting newsstands Monday.

Even Jennifer Aniston's closest friends are being kept in the dark about her upcoming wedding plans.
"I know she's engaged but that's all I know," Chelsea Handler told talk show host Katie Couric. "I'm sure I'll find out about it when it's about to happen ... for privacy issues."
Handler co-hosts Friday's episode of Couric's syndicated talk show Katie but had very little to share about her pal Aniston's pending nuptials to Justin Theroux.
"I honestly don't know anything about it," Handler said. "She doesn't consult me on her plans."

Yes, University of Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o tells Katie Couric in a new interview, he continued to tell the tale of Lennay Kekua after he realized she might not be real. But he's really a stand-up guy and a great boyfriend, says his real-life ex-girlfriend, Alexandra del Pilar.
Del Pilar, 21, describes her ex as a kind, gentle family man with a big heart who genuinely loved Lennay Kekua, who allegedly died of leukemia Sept. 12, though that turned out to be a hoax.
"Lennay was often brought up in conversation," Del Pilar, a junior at Notre Dame sister school St. Mary's College in South Bend, Ind., who met Te'o in November and dated him until earlier this month, tells PEOPLE. "I wanted to know about her, and how they did the long distance. He definitely [loved her]."
Del Pilar says Te'o, 22, proved equally devoted to her, regularly checking in before and after games when he was on the road – and he introduced her to his family.

Susan Sarandon, who famously lived and raised a family with her longtime former partner, actor Tim Robbins, says marriage just isn't her thing.
"I believe in it for other people. I think if it works for you, that's fabulous," the Oscar winner, 66, tells Katie Couric on Tuesday's Katie show. "I don't know, I was always hesitant … this idea of locking it in. I thought it would make it less spontaneous."
Sarandon, who was married in college to actor Chris Sarandon, has been rumored to be involved with her business partner in the New York city ping pong bar SPiN, Jonathan Bricklin, who is more than 30 years her junior. He has denied a romantic relationship, and says the two are simply friends.

Sheryl Crow suspects that the benign brain tumor she has may have been caused by her cell phone.
"There are no doctors that will confirm that," Crow, 50, said Monday while appearing on the premiere of Katie, the new syndicated talk show hosted by Katie Couric.
"[But] I do have the theory that it's possible that it's related to that. I [used to spend] hours on the old archaic cell phones."
Crow, who says the tumor is in a part of her brain near where she often held her phone, says she started to suspect something was wrong when she began spacing out on stage, forgetting lyrics and generally feeling "mushy."
