Known for its bombshells and cliffhangers, Scandal's season 2 finale was far from an exception.
The edge-of-your-seat political drama had even its cast in shock – especially at the very end.
"The last word [dropped my] jaw," Scott Foley, who plays Jake Ballard, told PEOPLE at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood shortly before the big episode aired.
"What? No. Oh, my god! There are so many questions that are answered and then these new questions pop up and we were all so taken aback. It was right there in front of us and we didn't know! It was right there."

Who knew that D.C.'s tough (and chic!) fixer lived in a space fit not for the capital, but for Hollywood royalty? Scandal's production designer, Corey Kaplan, gives PEOPLE a behind-the-scenes look at how they created Kerry Washington's character Olivia Pope's fabulous apartment.
The space is based off of apartments in the El Royale in Los Angeles, designed by William Douglas Lee of the Chateau Marmont in 1927. The illustrious building was once home to Clark Gable and Loretta Young.
"We took the basic elements of the El Royale apartments to stage," Kaplan says. "We loved the moldings and the embellishments, but we made it a little bit larger scale with larger arches."

Amid Oscar preparations, Kerry Washington made a little time for her mom over the weekend.
Fresh from the Independent Spirit Awards, the Django Unchained actress brought her loved one along to the Mattel Games gift lounge on Saturday in Santa Monica, Calif., where they bonded and talked about fashion.
"They told guests that they are extremely close and borrow each other's clothes constantly," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

Mindy Kaling is one confident lady!
The poised star of The Mindy Project looked pretty in pink on Wednesday as she stood in front a huge room full of people and admitted, "I love praise."
Conducting the opening statements at The Hollywood Reporter's annual Women in Entertainment breakfast, which honored Diane Keaton, Kaling said praising the Academy Award-winning actress "is enjoyable because she is so self-deprecating. She literally invented the art of gracefully deflecting praise. I could learn something from her."

As crisis manager Olivia Pope on ABC's Scandal, Kerry Washington knows how to handle a sticky situation.
But as an actress going about her daily life, Washington had a hard time giving fans of the series the answer to one simple question: Who is Quinn Perkins?
"[Quinn Perkins] represents my whole summer because all summer long people were walking up to me saying 'Who is Quinn Perkins!?' in supermarkets, airports ... It was so much fun! Luckily I didn't know [who she actually is] at the time because I don't know if I'd be able to keep it a secret for that long!" Washington, 35, tells PEOPLE.
