He plays a former FBI agent on the trail of a serial killer in his new series The Following, but in real life Kevin Bacon has more pressing cases to solve – like the mysterious origins of his beloved dogs Lilly and Rocky.
The actor, 54, was so curious about the breeds of the rescue dogs he shares with his wife, actress Kyra Sedgwick, and their two children that he set up his very own doggy DNA lab with a kit he purchased online.
"We did DNA testing, which is fun and something that just became possible," he tells PEOPLE. "What you do is swab the cheek of a mutt and you send it in. What comes back is what breeds are in the animal, which is really cool."

Ever wonder what Kyra Sedgwick finds sexy?
Her husband of 24 years, Kevin Bacon, has it all figured out.
"He is so honorable. He is so ethically true. He has high moral standards, and he doesn't lie and he doesn't cheat – and I find that sexy!" the actress, 47, says in the January issue of a newly redesigned Good Housekeeping.

Attention, Team USA Diving: Kevin Bacon and his dog could be what you need to get the gold in London this summer!
The actor and his pit bull Lilly have mastered the art of simultaneously jumping into a pool together, as evidenced by a video Bacon shared on WhoSay.
"The divers are approaching the board in the tandem canine-human diving event," a swim-trunks clad Bacon says as he and Lilly stand on a diving rock. "We are going to attempt a dual-dive."

The stars headed up to the Top of the Standard to celebrate the upcoming premiere of Girls, HBO's racy new comedy about four twentysomething women finding their way in New York City. And it was a glamorous cocktail party that was a far cry from the sometimes challenging Brooklyn living depicted on the witty new show.
With plates of charcuterie and cheese on reserved tables, guests such as Claire Danes, Chloe Sevigny, Gabourey Sidibe, former Real Housewives of N.Y.C. star Kelly Bensimon and the show's producer Judd Apatow fanned out around the circular room, mingling in the intimate space and taking in the panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline.
Danes shared a moment with the show's stars Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet while Lena Dunham, the new show's writer, director and lead actress, hung out at her private table, chatting with Apatow and greeting well-wishers such as John Cameron Mitchell with a friendly handshake. At one point, Dunham headed to Le Bain, just across the hall from the main party space, where she chatted with Boardwalk Empire's Steve Buscemi, who was enjoying a plate of food from the nearby buffet.

Who hasn't played Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon – that game in which it appears everyone has a link to the handsome actor?
But Bacon's own wife of 23 years (and mother of their two children, son Travis, 22 and daughter Sosie, 19), Kyra Sedgwick, has more of a link to her husband than she or anyone else might have imagined. They are distant cousins.
The revelation comes courtesy of the Sunday night PBS show on genealogy, Finding Your Roots.

Despite the many gorgeous celebrities flocking last night's Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet, Kyra Sedgwick stood out thanks to a bold new accessory.
Clad in a fire engine red Emilio Pucci column, The Closer star (and best drama actress nominee) explained the significance of the linear design resting just north of her exposed ribcage.
"It's a family tattoo," she told E! "It's all our initials K, K, S and T."
The actress was, of course, referring to husband of 23-years, Kevin Bacon, their son Travis, 22 and daughter Sosie, 19.

Kevin Bacon is not the kind of guy to look back at his past work. But when the studio unearthed his audition tape from 1984's original Footloose, he couldn't help himself.
"It was like a weird time-travel, out-of-body type thing," Bacon, 53, told PEOPLE. "It's like if you went and saw the interview you did for your first job. Wow. I literally turned the thing off, went into the bathroom, looked myself in the mirror and went, 'Jesus, is that even the same guy' "
So was he impressed with himself?

Like many other women who have struggled with weight and food issues, Kyra Sedwick admits that she too had a body image problem when she first started out in the business.
Playing a Holocaust survivor in the 1985 film War and Love, where the slender-framed actress dropped 20 lbs., started what she says was a year-long battle.
"Food has never been easy for me. I came back from that [role], and it triggered something," The Closer star, 44, tells More in its July/August issue. "I ate everything in sight. My weight went up and then too far down."
