Britney Spears's custody settlement with her ex Kevin Federline, in which he retained sole custody of the couple's two sons, came at a price.

A source close to the singer confirms she'll now pay Federline $20,000 a month in child support, an increase from $15,000.

Federline's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, also demanded and received $250,000 for his work on the case, the source adds.

"All Britney was seeking was a formalization of her increased visitation that she's obtained over recent weeks, and the additional overnight," the source said. "She won both of those requests."

It's Over: Britney & Kevin Reach a Custody Settlement

Britney Spears and her ex Kevin Federline have reached a custody settlement in their epic court battle over their two sons – averting a scheduled trial.

According to the agreement, which still needs to be signed off on by the court, Federline retains sole custody of the couple's two sons, Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden, 1 1/2. Spears – who's currently allowed two visits and one overnight per week – will get more visitation rights.

"The case has been settled," Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan (working with attorney James Simon), tells PEOPLE. "This is the end of a two-year journey."

Spears's attorney, Laura Wasser, said outside the courtroom after the hearing: "Britney's doing great. She's very pleased [with the settlement]. The kids are with her right now."

Britney Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline are headed for a custody trial next month – but some legal experts say a settlement is more likely.

"If Britney goes to trial, it's a gamble," says L.A. family lawyer Lynn Soodik, who's not involved with the case. "Yes, she could win more time with her kids, or she could lose what's already in place."

The former couple, who are parents to Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden, 1 1/2, are due back in court Friday for a routine custody hearing.

He may have partied till nearly dawn, but parenting was on the mind of Kevin Federline Friday night into Saturday morning – capping a week in which he and ex Britney Spears seem destined for a custody showdown.

"Kevin was in a great mood and even talked about a new song he is working on, called 'Daddy's Home,' " says a source at Mansion on South Beach – where K-Fed (as host) and his party of 10 and a security guard stayed until 4 a.m. Saturday, following a late dinner at Miami's Michy's, an intimate and upscale restaurant.

"He has put a lot of time and effort into writing and rehearsing it, but says it is not quite ready yet," the source tells PEOPLE.

Britney and Kevin Headed for Custody Trial

Britney Spears and Kevin Federline appear to be headed for a custody trial in August, after an attempt Thursday to settle out of court failed.

After a day of talks with a mediator, Federline's attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told E!, "The mediation didn't result in an agreement that would avoid the trial set in August ... The mood was comfortable, positive and it was a mood that was consistent with opening at least a great dialogue, which is necessary."

Kaplan added that his client is seeking sole physical and legal custody of sons Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden, 1 1/2, and wants Spears to continue her current visitation terms.

The singer has been spending three days a week with the boys and was recently granted overnight privileges.

Britney Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline separately arrived at a Los Angeles court Tuesday for a custody hearing.

Spears, 26, is apparently seeking a change in her visitation schedule, but details weren't immediately known. The hearing was closed to the public.

At 8:40 a.m., a somber-looking Federline, wearing a beige suit, entered the courtroom along with his lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan.

Spears, also looking somber, entered shortly thereafter with her father. Her blonde hair was straight and long and she wore a white shirt, beige pants, and wedges. She took a seat on the right side of the courtroom, while Federline was seated on left side.

Laura Wasser, Spears's original divorce lawyer, rejoined the singer's legal team. Wasser entered the courtroom along with a lawyer working for Spears's conservatorship.

Although Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were in Las Vegas on Friday, the former couple managed to navigate the social scene without running into each other.

While Spears, 26, relaxed and sipped water in a cabana at the Cinevegas party at the Palms Place, Federline drank Jack Daniels at Strip House only a few miles away. And while Spears's night ended early, her ex kept the party going past 3 a.m. at Prive Las Vegas, where he was honored as "Father of the Year".

Kevin Federline is the new father of the year!

Just in time for Father's Day, Prive Las Vegas will award the proud papa of four his "father of the year" status at a party he is slated to host there June 13.

Sources tell PEOPLE he will be awarded the title during a presentation at the club.

The unofficial honor is Federline's second such recognition in a relatively short time. Last November, Details magazine also anointed him father of the year – an honor he shared with onetime Anna Nicole Smith boyfriend Larry Birkhead.
