Originally posted 04/13/2012 04:45PM
Congratulations are in order for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who confirmed their engagement to PEOPLE on Friday.
But the couple, who've been together since 2005, have had plenty to say on the subject of marriage over the years – namely why they weren't going to do it.
Citing lack of marriage equality and the commitment of parenting their six children, the two have celebrated their partnership in the press even as they (mostly) said they had no plans to walk down the aisle.
Here's a chronological look back at how they've addressed their feelings about marriage over the years:

Originally posted 02/28/2012 10:30AM
A day after dazzling in velvet Versace at the Academy Awards, Angelina Jolie was back to normal – and showing a lot less leg – running errands in L.A. Monday.
After taking a coffee break with partner Brad Pitt's mom, Jane, the actress, dressed down in black, was spotted out and about with 3-year-old twins, Knox and Vivienne.
And although she was all smiles, Jolie, 36, wasn't striking any poses for the paparazzi like she did when she hit the Oscars stage to present the award for Best Adapted Screenplay Sunday night.

Saddle up, cowboy!
Angelina Jolie helped 3½-year-old son Knox onto a pony at the Farmer's Market in Studio City, Calif., during a family outing on Sunday.
The actress visited the market along with Shiloh, 5½, and Pax, 8, but it was Knox who – with a little boost from Mom – got to have a ride on the pony.
Despite Jolie's encouragement, Knox didn't feel up to the experience and appeared to be crying while he was riding solo. The little guy had more exploring to do, though – he played in a bouncy house and spent time on a swing ride while Jolie held onto some chocolate-covered strawberries.

Angelina Jolie: I Don't Lecture My Children
Originally posted 01/09/2012 02:00PM
Angelina Jolie is as well known for her work helping refugees around the world as she is for making movies. But she'll let her kids decide for themselves whether they want to follow in her activist footsteps.
"I'm not one of those moms who kind of lectures [my kids]," Jolie, 36, told reporters on Saturday at the 23rd Annual Palm Springs Film Festival. "But I do tell them, whenever I go on a trip, where I'm going and why. And on some occasions, they've come with me to different refugee camps. And they also go to their home countries a lot."
The actress, who wore an Elie Saab gown to the festival's awards gala, has faith her little ones will make decisions based on what they see in their day-to-day lives.

Angelina Jolie: Kids Wonder Why We're Not Married Like Shrek & Fiona
Originally posted 12/05/2011 10:35AM
Hey, those people in the movies are getting married. Why aren't Mom and Dad?
That's the question Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's children have started asking, according to the actress, whose stance on marriage is the subject of intense interest outside the household as well.
"They have asked, yeah, because ... people get married in the movies," Jolie, 36, tells Nightline in an interview airing Monday. "Shrek and Fiona are married, you know?"
So, how does she respond? By explaining that you don't have to be married to be committed to a partner or your family.

Brad Pitt Explains Being a Satisfied Man

Brad Pitt may appear to be on top of the world, but he insists that happiness is "overrated."
"I put much more emphasis on being a satisfied man," the actor, 47, tells Parade magazine in a revealing interview that will be published Sunday. "I'm satisfied with making true choices and finding the woman I love, Angie, and building a family that I love so much."
Pitt describes his partner, Angelina Jolie, as "such a great mom," and says starting a family with her was "one of the greatest, smartest things I ever did."
"A family is a risky venture, because the greater the love, the greater the loss," he adds. "That's the trade-off."

Afterward, the couple was spotted picking up souvenirs at the gift shop (including novelty pencils for the kids), and sat down to a traditional supper, where Maddox showed off his surprisingly sophisticated palate.
