Separated from his Rules of Engagement actress wife for more than a year, professional soccer player Landon Donovan has taken steps to end his marriage officially.
The Team U.S.A. hero in the World Cup filed for divorce Tuesday from Bianca Kajlich, according to Los Angeles Superior Court papers.
"We remain the closest of friends and will always be important parts of each other's lives," the pair say in a joint statement.
Donovan, 28, who wed Kajlich, 33, on New Year's Eve 2006, separated from her in October 2009, according to the divorce petition.

During the World Cup, U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan said he was "informed of the possibility" that a British woman was pregnant with his child.
Now, he knows the truth.
"I will not be a dad any time soon, which is good news for me," Donovan told E! Online at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Instead of checking out of the World Cup with trophies, soccer studs Cristiano Ronaldo and Landon Donovan were rewarded with babies – sort of.
Ronaldo welcomed his baby boy Saturday, and although the identity of the mother has not yet been revealed, it's creating more buzz than Germany crushing Argentina to advance. Donovan's case is less clean-cut than the well-groomed Team Portugal hunk's. The U.S.A. soccer star faces the report of a British woman who claims she is pregnant with his child.
Did we mention the FIFA World Cup Trophy (which weighs in at about 13 lbs.) is only slightly larger than a newborn?
As Ronaldo and (potentially) Donovan make the transition from futbol to fatherhood, here are two more unanswered questions:

In honor of the 4th of July, we're calling out four celebs who make us proud to be Americans – and of course another four we wish would get packing for Canada. From charitable to cheating, which American stars would make George Washington's team? And who needs to step up their game?
Brad Pitt: The actor made a big impact in the Big Easy with his Make It Right campaign, a housing project targeted to those hit the hardest by Hurricane Katrina. Besides being easy on the eyes, and a good ole family man, his thoughtfulness warms the heart.
Sandra Bullock: After a public split with ex-hubby Jesse James, America's Oscar-winning sweetheart had better things to talk about – like her baby boy she adopted from New Orleans. The new mom even made an appearance at a benefit concert in Nashville for flood recovery. Bouncing back after-all, is the American way.

Last week's emotional phone call between Landon Donovan and his estranged wife Bianca Kajlich wasn't just a spur of the moment reconciliation.
"I've known Bianca for eight years. We have been and will always be best of friends," the soccer star said Wednesday on The Early Show after returning to the States from the World Cup in South Africa.
Donovan, 28, quietly split with the Rules of Engagement actress, 33, in July 2009 but gave her a shout-out and blew her a kiss during a post-game interview after he helped keep Team USA's hopes alive in a crucial match.

After scoring three goals on soccer's biggest stage, Landon Donovan touched down on U.S. soil Tuesday from South Africa, where he had helped keep Team USA's hopes alive in the World Cup – before Ghana ousted them Saturday.
The soccer stud, 28, was tight-lipped during his homecoming at a Washington D.C.-area airport, which came just one day after a British woman claimed she was pregnant with his child.
But Donovan won't be staying mum much longer. He's scheduled to drop by the Late Show with David Letterman for a sit down with the talk show host later in the day.

His team crashed out of the World Cup this weekend, and now Landon Donovan faces a personal crisis: a forthcoming report from a U.K. newspaper in which a British woman claims she is pregnant with Donovan's child.
Donovan, 28, is separated from his wife, actress Bianca Kajlich, but they are not divorced – a fact the U.S. soccer star emphasized last week, after he and Kajlich shared an emotional phone call following his winning goal against Algeria.
Regarding the pregnancy report, Donovan did not deny it might be true, telling Sports Illustrated's Web site: "I was informed of the possibility during the World Cup, and if I need to take responsibility, then I will provide the appropriate support. This is a private matter, and I will refrain from further comment at this time."
