The Bushes Settling Into Post-White House Life

Life back in the civilian world is decidedly more slow-paced than the frenetic schedule George and Laura Bush kept for the last eight years when they occupied the White House, the former First Lady reveals in a new interview.

The former President and his wife, who are still settling into their home in the Preston Hollow section of Dallas, have a sparsely-furnished house and no newspaper delivery service yet – but are enjoying the company of friends, Laura tells ABC News in an interview set to air Thursday on World News and again Friday on Good Morning America.

"We have very little furniture. We don't have a kitchen table or a dining room table," she says. "Friends loaned me a kitchen table and the other night I had 16 people for dinner and I had to borrow chairs from the Secret Service next door."

Inside the Bushes' Moving Truck? Not Much

Originally posted 01/20/2009 09:00AM

Laura and George Bush discovered there wasn't much to load onto the moving truck as they prepared to turn over the keys to Michelle and Barack Obama on Tuesday.

"Very, very few things," Mrs. Bush told PEOPLE in the weeks leading up to the couple's move back to Texas and a newly purchased home in Dallas. "I mean, of course I have a million books, and lots of clothes – now."

Showing PEOPLE around the White House's private quarters on the second floor, Mrs. Bush said she didn't arrive in Washington with a whole lot of clothes, back in 2001, when President Bush was first sworn in.

"But I'm leaving with a lot of clothes, which is great – I'll never have to buy clothes again." Pausing, she added with a chuckle, "As I don't gain a lot of weight."

Laura Bush's White House memoir will be published by the house of Scribner, most likely in 2010, the New York-based publisher announced Monday.

"As a rare witness to the private moments of one of our country's most consequential presidencies, and as a first lady who has maintained a notable level of discretion, her memoir will provide a candid and personal perspective, and an enduring record, of the years that have already determined the course of the 21st century," executive vice president and publisher of Scribner Susan Maldow said in a statement.

Laura Bush Shares Spotlight with Jonas Brothers

Originally posted 11/03/2008 09:30AM

Laura Bush had a pleasant surprise for the 150 kids gathered at Dallas's Trinity River Audubon Center: her pals Nick, Joe and Kevin – the Jonas Brothers.

The first lady and the young heartthrobs spent Sunday promoting the First Bloom conservation program by helping students make seed balls from compost, clay, native grass seeds and water.

After Mrs. Bush donned gloves to pitch in, the brothers followed suit.

Nick, 16, needed a little help, however. After he rolled a muddy ball, he displayed it to a young girl standing next to him and asked, "Make it bigger?"

So much for the party.

"George and I were planning to come to enjoy this convention, to have a really good time," First Lady Laura Bush told disappointed delegates Monday as Hurricane Gustav rained on plans for a festive opening to the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Instead, she and Cindy McCain headlined an abbreviated, business-only afternoon session of the convention, using the opportunity to plug charities helping Gulf Coast victims of the hurricane.

"Our first priority for today and in the coming days is to ensure the safety and well-being of those living in the Gulf Coast region," said Bush.

"This is a time when we take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats," added McCain.

The White House's Blue Room has gone green – with this year's Executive Mansion Christmas tree.

Unveiling the 19-year-old, 18-ft, Fraser fir from Mistletoe Farm in North Carolina, First Lady Laura Bush made special appearances on Thursday morning's Good Morning America and Today shows.

"We have to remove the chandelier from the Blue Room because the tree is so big," she has noted, adding, "the tree will be decorated with about 300 – a little over 300 ornaments from around the country."
