Romance hasn't come easy for Leighton Meester over the years – and that's okay with her.
"I think that the importance of love is really strong for me in my life, whether it's a guy or a friend or just my puppy," the Gossip Girl actress, who also stars in Country Strong, tells February's Seventeen, on newsstands Jan. 4. "I think love changes you over time, and whether you have good or bad experiences, you always grow and learn from it."
Still, Meester, 24, admits to some trouble finding the right fit in a romantic relationship.

Leighton Meester may not have the relationship her Gossip Girl alter ego enjoys with her onscreen love, Chuck, but she's okay with that.
"It's wonderful to be in love," the actress, 24, tells the January issue of Allure. "And it's definitely wonderful to cuddle and have sex and get to experience life with somebody. But it's okay if you don't find him and you're 24. You can find it someday."
Meester says she understands the kind of love her character, Blair Waldorf, shares with Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) on the show.

Happy birthday, Blair Waldorf!
The Upper East Side's reigning queen bee is celebrating her big day in style – literally.
On Monday's episode of Gossip Girl (9 p.m. ET), Blair (Leighton Meester) will get a very fashionable sweet treat in the form of shoe-shaped cookies by New York City bakery Eleni's.
"All of the shoes were designed based upon actual shoes in Blair Waldorf's shoe collection," Margo Spiritus of Eleni's tells PEOPLE. "The costume department [at Gossip Girl] sent us photos of all nine of the shoes. They are all designer shoes. We recreated them as cookies."
Perhaps the baked goods will sweeten the deal, because Blair is set to get an unsavory surprise when an unexpected guest shows up at her celebration.
Want to make the cookies yourself? Here's the recipe:

The side entrance pops open with a bang and Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy – intent upon escaping their tour group tour – come bursting out, rushing down steps. The director, Tom Bezucha, shouts "Cut!," and the girls dissolve into giggles before, arms around each other, resuming their places for another take.
It was the scene at the Eiffel Tower early Monday morning as the shooting of Monte Carlo, a romantic comedy costarring Glee's Corey Monteith, set for release next year.
After seven weeks filming together inside Budapest studios, one on set source tells PEOPLE, they couldn't wait to get outside – even in near freezing temperatures. 'They really get along really well. You can see they've gotten to be friends on this ... It's like a trip that way. There's this chemistry and sometimes it's almost conspiratorial, but these girls really adore each other."

Though primarily known as Blair Waldorf on the CW's Gossip Girl, Meester is hoping to become recognized as a singer – having been a part of Cobra Starship's hit song "Good Girls Go Bad." And she already has one big musical mentor.
"Recently I've spent a lot of time with Cyndi Lauper, and she's a legend," says Meester. "She gave me the advice: Never sell your publishing, so I'll take that."
The thrill of the stage has Meester – who's worked with Lil Wayne, Robin Thicke and Adam Lambert – hooked.
"I get more excited than nervous, and I feel like that's the best kind of energy to have," the TV actress, 23, told PEOPLE Saturday before a 15-minute gig at Venetian's Tao Las Vegas. The performance, she says, is "cute, sexy ... I'm just having the time of my life, and I hope it continues." (See her video with Thicke here.)

Don't expect Leighton Meester to use the 'L' word any time soon.
"I always resist falling in love," the Gossip Girl actress, 23, tells British Glamour in its December issue. "My problem is, I lose interest. Every time I've fallen in love, it's just momentary."
And Meester certainly hasn't kept in touch with any of her ex-boyfriends – in fact she would rather forget them completely.
"Honestly," she says, "I've hated every boyfriend I've had."
