Levon Helm Remembered by Sheryl Crow, Adam Levine

Some of the biggest names in music are honoring one of the biggest legends.

After Levon Helm, the drummer for The Band, died Thursday at 71, Sheryl Crow took to Twitter to express her condolences.

"My heart [is] heavy with sad news of Levon Helm's passing," she wrote. "My thoughts and prayers are with Levon's family."

Also Tweeting about the late Helm, who had cancer: Maroon 5 frontman and The Voice coach Adam Levine.

Levon Helm, the legendary drummer for The Band whose country-flavored vocals are heard on the hit "The Weight," died Thursday at 71.

"Levon Helm passed peacefully this afternoon," his rep says. "He was surrounded by family, friends and bandmates and will be remembered by all he touched as a brilliant musician and a beautiful soul."

Earlier this week, his wife Sandy and daughter announced on his website that he was "in the final stages of his battle with cancer."

Legendary The Band drummer Levon Helm is "in the final stages of his battle with cancer."

Helms's wife Sandy and daughter Amy made the announcement late Tuesday on his website.

"Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey," they wrote. "Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration ... he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage ... We appreciate all the love and support and concern."
