With Lil Wayne behind bars, someone's got to keep his Young Money record label relevant. Wayne's artist, Nicki Minaj, is doing just that.

On the mainstream scene for less than a year, Minaj has already won two BET Awards (for best female hip-hop artist and best new artist) and landed a No. 1 single with "Your Love" on the Billboard rap charts.

But the firecracker, 25, who spent the majority of her upbringing in Queens, N.Y., has a lot more to her than wild hair, a racy wardrobe and a foul mouth. Here are five things to know about Lil Wayne's protégé, Nicki Minaj.

1. She had a rough upbringing
Her lyrics may be silly and carefree, but growing up was anything but lighthearted for Minaj. "[My dad] drank a lot and did drugs, and would get violent when he did," she told Details in May. "He set fire to the house, [and] was attempting to kill my mother. She got out before it burned all the way down. I've always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind…I thought, 'If I'm successful, I can change her life.' "

As of Monday, rapper Lil Wayne has a new moniker: Inmate Carter.

The platinum-selling artist (real name: Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.), who began his yearlong jail sentence for gun possession on Monday, is facing a lot of new circumstances these days.

The rapper is living among the general population of inmates at the Eric. M. Taylor Center (the facility for sentenced males at Riker's Island), but he is also afforded a low level of protective custody, due to his public profile.

"Inmate Carter is in a category of housing that we call 'general population/escort,' " a New York City Department of Corrections official tells PEOPLE. That means when he leaves the housing area (his cell or the day room), he will have a captain escorting him at all times.

On an hourly basis, the rapper can decide if he wants to be locked in his cell or locked out of it – for security reasons, inmates are not allowed to freely move between their cell and the common areas.

What else can Lil' Wayne expect from the year ahead? The official shared the following details:

Lil Wayne is headed to prison Tuesday, but you'll see more of him over the next year than you might expect.

The rapper, 27, had his incarceration on a weapons conviction postponed last month so he could have dental surgery – and he used the extra time to film nine music videos over a 48-hour period, Pop Eater reports.

To further ensure that he doesn't fade from the spotlight, Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., plans to release his eighth studio album, Tha Carter IV, soon after he's released in early 2011.
