Lily Allen's Happiness Helps Her Shed the Weight

Originally posted 01/29/2009 08:00AM

Lily Allen says she has many reasons to "Smile." The singer is feeling better with herself – and when she feels good, she keeps the weight off.

While promoting her new album It's Not Me, Allen, 23, says life "feels good," the press is treating her more kindly and the secret to being content with her body is to halt her urge to order French fries from room service in order to fill the happiness gap.

"The only reason I have lost weight is because I comfort eat when I'm not very happy," Allen tells the U.K. tabloid the Sun."The last two years, even though I had a lot of success with my first record, I was … getting so drunk.

Lily Allen says she was so depressed after a miscarriage last year that she sought treatment at a mental health center.

Allen, 23, went to what she calls a "nuthouse," a "psychiatric clinic," according to an interview in the Daily Telegraph's magazine.

"I stayed there for three weeks. I was really depressed because of the miscarriage and I'd kind of lost the plot a bit. It was quite a nasty time," she says.

Don't expect one-time party girl Lily Allen to stumble out of a club anytime soon.

"I've become a character in a comic … and that character is always drunk! I wish my comic character wasn't that," she told the U.K.'s Observer Music Monthly.

Allen claims she's been off alcohol "since 22 September," and doesn't plan on indulging again – at least for now.

"I have no intention of taking drugs again at the moment," she said. "But I can't say 'Never again,' because I don't know where I'll be in 10 years' time. And I will definitely drink in the future, just not for awhile."

Lily Allen picked up a songwriting award for "Smile" at the BMI Awards in London Tuesday, but the singer had another reason to celebrate.

"I got my U.S. visa today, yay!" she told PEOPLE at the awards. "It means I can go and tour there and finish what I started, which is something I've wanted to do for a while."

Allen had her visa revoked – and was forced to cancel a string of show dates – in August 2007 after a scuffle with a photographer.

The singer – who has blamed her record company for album delays – also revealed that she finally has a title and a release date for her second album.

Lily Allen spoke out Friday about her spat with Elton John at a London awards show Tuesday night.

The online posting refers to an incident when an apparently tipsy Allen clashed with John at the GQ Men of the Year awards ceremony, which the pair co-presented on Sept. 2.

As Allen, 23, introduced a segment as a "very special point in the evening," John, 61, said, "What, you are going to have another drink?"

A visibly tipsy Lily Allen got into a profanity-laced verbal spat with Elton John onstage as the two hosted the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London Tuesday night.

As Allen introduced a segment as a "very special point in the evening," according to the The Times of London, John questioned: "What, you are going to have another drink?"

In front of an audience that included Gordon Ramsay, producer Mark Ronson (brother of Samantha) and London mayor Boris Johnson, the 23-year-old pop star shot back, "F--- off Elton, I'm 40 years younger than you. I have my whole life ahead of me." To which the 61-year-old John replied, "I could still snort you under the table."

Allen followed the exchange with a crude ad lib when 82-year-old Tony Bennett was presented with the night's Inspiration Award. As John introduced Bennett, pointing out his age, Allen broke in, declaring: "I'll still [have sex with] him."

A usually cheeky Lily Allen showed her less confident side recently in Los Angeles when talking about her skills as a musician.

“I left school at 15. I’m not a genius songwriter. I don’t think I’m really good at anything,” Allen told the U.K. version of Rolling Stone, adding that she feels that she “got away with something.”

Fears aside, Allen’s sophomore album is nearing the wrapping stages and it’s going to make listeners feel "naughty."
