Lindsey Vonn: Out of Olympics, On the Red Carpet at Fashion Week

Originally posted 02/06/2014 08:55PM

A red carpet is a lot less treacherous than the ski slopes, so injured Olympian Lindsey Vonn could ditch the crutches long enough to make a splash at New York Fashion Week.

Trading winter gear for a red gown, Vonn walked (gingerly) in low kitten heels, pausing to pose for pictures with fellow athlete Sasha Cohen, at the Heart Truth Red Dress Fashion Show on Thursday night.

Halfway around the world in Sochi, Russia, the 2014 Winter Olympics were beginning, with 230 athletes from the United States getting ready for Friday's opening ceremony.

Gold medalist Vonn, 29, the most accomplished skier in U.S. history, had to sit out the Games after back-to-back knee injuries. She credits boyfriend Tiger Woods and her mother for helping her get through her Olympic heartache.

Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn admits it's tough not being able to defend her downhill skiing gold medal in Sochi, especially after working hard to battle back from an earlier knee injury, only to suffer a second one.

"It's hard. I just want to be there but I can't," says Vonn, 29, who made the difficult decision to sit out this Olympics once she realized her knee was too unstable to compete.

Vonn, the most accomplished female skier in U.S. history, credits her mom, Lindy Lund, with helping her stay positive no matter what challenge she has faced.
