Psst! Slowly … discreetly … take a peek at the person next to you.

About 40 years old? Maybe five-foot-nine? Hanging out with a Nick Cannon lookalike?

You may be standing right next to Mariah Carey.

"I go for walks in a semi-disguise. That's fun to me," Carey, who plays a dowdy welfare case worker in Precious tells AOL's Popeater. "I like to go to public places and do things that I would never get a chance to do. The other night, I went out wearing all Nick's clothes."

Mariah Carey Loses the Glam for Latest Role

Originally posted 10/05/2009 11:05AM

Mariah Carey arrived at Saturday night's New York Film Festival screening of her movie Precious adorned with diamonds and a posse of security guards. But away from the glamorous hubbub, she's just a regular girl at heart, say her costars.

"If you're around her enough, 'Mariah' goes away and she's like everyone else," says actress Gabourey Sidibe, who formed a close friendship with Carey on the set. "She's just a normal girl who talks about normal things like fashion and things like that. She's so nice."

In the film, opening nationally Nov. 6, Carey plays a plain-looking case-worker. For the role, the songstress, 40, bared her face in front of the camera free of makeup and donned dowdy outfits.

Toronto Film Festival: Five Movies You'll Want To See

Originally posted 09/20/2009 01:00PM

Too many movies, too little time. That's the story at the Toronto International Film Festival, where 273 feature-length films were shown during the 10-day festival that wrapped Saturday. I managed to see 26 of them during my week's stay. Here's the word on five I really like that will be in theaters soon:

Up In the Air. George Clooney, that smooth-walking combination of star power and smarts, stars in a hugely likable comedy that couldn't be more timely. He plays a contentedly single guy who specializes in firing people, a job requiring that he constantly fly all over the country. Based on a novel by Walter Kirn, the movie is written and directed by Jason Reitman (Juno) and features a breakout supporting performance by Twilight's Anna Kendrick. Opens Nov. 13.

There's nothing diva-like about Mariah Carey in the new movie Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire.

Playing a case worker in a welfare office, Carey's makeup consists of dark circles under her eyes and a slight mustache, all lit by glaring overhead fluorescent tubes.

"This is so ugly, man, I don't know what to do," Carey said Friday on The Oprah Winfrey Show, which was broadcast live from Central Park in New York City. Her look for the movie, which is based on the novel Push by Sapphire, was so unflattering, she said, that she tried to sneak on some blush but was caught by director Lee Daniels.

Mariah Carey may have shed her glamorous look for the gritty drama Precious, but it didn't stop the singer from talking about the fabulous life with costar Gabourey Sidibe.

"Mariah and I would sit and talk about fashion and perfume and jewelry," the 20-something acting newbie – who plays the title role in the film – told MTV.com.

"It was like sitting in junior high and talking to your bestie," Sidibe added of bonding on-set with Carey. "She hated her wardrobe! We all hated our wardrobe!"

Reports that Mariah Carey has rescheduled several upcoming appearances have left many fans wondering if something might be wrong with the singer.

Carey, 40, had been tentatively set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Aug. 25, perform on Today Aug. 28, and also tape an episode of VH1's Storytellers.

But the singer's publicist Cindi Berger tells PEOPLE there is no reason for concern: "These dates have been postponed and not cancelled," she said Friday.

A source says the singer is completing her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, the release of which has been pushed to Sept. 29.

Separated at Birth: Mariah Carey and Eminem?

Is Mariah Carey having the last laugh in her ongoing feud with Eminem?

While filming her latest music video for the song "Obsessed" in New York on Monday, Carey was snapped sporting an oversized sweatshirt, fitted baseball cap and baggy sweatpants, an outfit noticeably similar to Eminem's performance wardrobe.

Total coincidence, says the singer. "It was weird but I wasn't playing anyone in particular," Carey wrote in a message to PEOPLE. "We [Carey and director Brett Ratner] were actually inspired by the King of Comedy starring Jerry Lewis and Robert DeNiro. I was just your regular everyday stalker with a few touches of Mean Girls :)."

Before receiving Mariah's message, PEOPLE.com had speculated that the pop diva may have been responding to lyrics from Eminem's recent album Relapse, on which the controversial rapper namedrops Carey in the track "Bagpipes From Baghdad."

Although the serious plans for starting a family with wife Mariah Carey are still a few months away, Nick Cannon already has a clear idea of the kind of father he'll be.

"I want to be a father that's all about love," Cannon tells PEOPLE. "That's the main thing to get right and at the end of the day it's just about smothering my children with love. The same way I do to my wife!"

Along with being a cuddly and doting dad, Cannon, 28, says he will be goofy. "I will probably be the fun dad because I'm silly," he says. "I'm always trying to have a good time and always doing funny and stupid stuff."

What's a film festival on the French Riviera without a little star-like behavior?

Mariah Carey was the undeniable hit of a dinner party Saturday night to celebrate the Cannes film festival screening of her new movie Precious – even if she did arrive fashionably late.

Guests at the party at Nikki Beach, where cocktails were served at 8 p.m. and dinner followed at 9, had given up hope after the star earlier canceled her scheduled appearance, then sashayed in with husband Nick Cannon at 11:30.
