Today might be the only day any of us will ever feel sorry for Ben Affleck. The nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning and the Argo director shockingly didn't make the cut.

But here's who did – and who should have:

Best Director

The shock: Two huge snubs! Not only did Argo's Affleck get dissed, even though he had one of the best-reviewed films of the year, but so did Zero Dark Thirty's Kathryn Bigelow, a previous Best Director winner for The Hurt Locker – which I'd argue isn't nearly the accomplishment that Zero Dark Thirty is. Both of the films about terror made the cut for Best Picture, however. But then, that was expected.

Shocked and "keeping victims' families in their thoughts," The Dark Knight Rises cast jetted back to the states after Friday's horrific shooting at a screening of their new film.

Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were in France for the canceled Paris premiere, but took a Warner Brothers plane bound for Los Angeles on Saturday.

"The cast was completely shocked and several – Anne and Marion [Cotillard], a couple of the men – were in tears," a source tells PEOPLE. "There was enormous, enormous sadness."

Stars Will Light Up Cannes Film Festival

The carpet will be red hot – with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson,Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, and new parents Emma Heming and Bruce Willis, turning this year's Cannes Film Festival into a two-week A-lister date night.

Add in Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban – and the possibility of a Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith sighting – and you might forget they also show movies at the world's most glamorous film event.

The 65th Cannes fest, which will run from May 16 to 27, formally announced its schedule in Paris on Thursday, and organizers haven't stinted on star power.

After a quiet summer as a new mom, Marion Cotillard is finally ready show off her baby boy, Marcel.

The Inception actress, 35, and her 3-month-old son were photographed leaving Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday – and it looks like Marcel already has an eye for the camera!

The Oscar-winning actress (for La Vie en Rose) and her French actor-director beau Guillaume Canet, 38, welcomed Marcel in May.

Their son, named Marcel, was born Thursday night in Paris, a source confirms to PEOPLE. "Mother and baby are fine," says the source, who adds that Cotillard is "very happy."

Cotillard, 35, and Canet, 38, first starred together in 2003's Love Me If You Dare and began dating in 2007.

Gotham City is about to get a French accent. Already set to star Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Christian Bale returning as the Caped Crusader, the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, is also welcoming a formidable femme fatale: 2008 Oscar winner Marion Cotillard.

While it still remains to be seen whether the French star, 35, will play a romantic interest or a rival superhero to Hathaway's character of Selina Kyle – also known as Catwoman – the addition of Cotillard comes as a surprise, reports Monday's Le Parisien newspaper.



Sources also tell PEOPLE that the La Vie en Rose Oscar winner, who is expecting a baby in April with her French actor-director beau Guillaume Canet, signed onto the Batman project Saturday in Paris.

The couple are expecting their first child together, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.

The race for golden statuettes starts now – and those in the running are expressing shock and gratitude for their recognition by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

"I am beyond stunned," said Sandra Bullock in a statement for her two Golden Globe nods: Best Actress in a Drama for The Blind Side and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for The Proposal. "Just to be included in the company of these amazing women I have so admired through the years has left me slack-jawed with awe."

Others like Marion Cotillard, Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical nominee for Nine, were awakened in the wee hours with the good news. "I got a phone call that woke me up and heard 'Congratulations,' and I knew what it was about," Cotillard told PEOPLE. "I'm just so happy! How couldn’t I be?"

After a private Mediterranean cruise with 12 pals that sailed from Aug. 12 through 16 along the French Riviera, Leonardo DiCaprio got an early jump on Labor Day by going back to work Monday in Paris for his latest movie, Inception, directed by Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan and which started shooting in London last month.

Trade reports have described Inception as a contemporary sci-fi action thriller set within "the architecture of the mind." But for DiCaprio and his costars, La Vie En Rose Oscar winner Marion Cotillard and Juno Oscar nominee Ellen Page, the setting was one of the more recognizable bridges on the Seine.

The bridge itself – the Pont de Bir-Hakeim – is no stranger to the screen, having recently been seen in 2007's National Treasure 2. Steven Spielberg also used it and its above-ground Metro line and distinctive view of the Eiffel Tower in his 2005 Munich, while Marlon Brando walked across it in the groundbreaking 1973 Last Tango in Paris. Now it's DiCaprio's turn.
