An awkward thing happened to the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Revenant as it trekked into theaters last last year in hopes of picking up award show nominations: A rumor put the film in headlines but for reasons that none of its publicists were happy about. In early December, 20th Century Fox spokespeople were forced to clarify that no, the film does not feature a scene in which its star is raped by a bear.

It's been a good year for TV – and by TV, we mean those serialized shows you probably watch on your computer or smartphone. Regardless of the technology you use to watch it, however, television has been growing bigger, better and more daring in recent years, to the point that it's the go-to format for people who want to tell a story in greater depth than they could in a movie.

Empire returned for season 2 with a vengeance on Wednesday night – and plenty of appearances by A-list celebrities.
The most notable guest stars were Oscar winner Marisa Tomei as Mimi Whiteman, a record company investor being wooed by Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), and comedian Chris Rock as the long-feared drug kingpin Frank Gathers who ends up in prison alongside Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) – and wants Cookie punished for snitching on him all those years ago. SPOILER ALERT: Only one character made it out of the premiere alive.

Fox's breakout, buzzed-about smash hit Empire starts its second season Wednesday, and it's very much like the first: Taraji P. Henson's Cookie Lyon remains the most wildly entertaining character in any primetime drama.

While we're obviously excited to see the return of Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and the rest of the Lyon family, we're also dying to find out what the new season's influx of guest stars will bring to the table.

The Empire continues to grow.
After an incredibly well-received first season, Fox's hit hip-hop drama is set to return in the fall with an even more epic cast.
Joining the Taraji P. Henson- and Terrence Howard-led cast is Marisa Tomei, who will appear as a recurring character during the show's second season.

Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei recently traveled to Italy to investigate a murder mystery – and no, that's not the plot of her latest on-screen project.
Tomei, 47, made the journey to look into the death of her great-grandfather, as part of NBC's Who Do You Think You Are?, which gives celebrities a chance to delve into their heritage. The Ides of March star examined records at an Italian church in order to piece together her family history.
Growing up, family legend was that the actress's great-grandfather was a womanizer and a gambler whose philandering ways led to him being fatally shot in a bar, according to the NBC show. But documents that Tomei uncovered in Italy cited his cause of death as "illness."
